Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The only thing more surprising than the Chicago Bulls winning on the road is that they came from behind to do it.

Ron Mercer scored four of his 19 points in the final minute, nailing the go-ahead jumper with 37 seconds left as the Bulls rallied for their first road victory, 94-91 over the dismal Atlanta Hawks.

Chicago was winless in 18 road games this season and had not won away from the United Center since April 18, when it defeated Philadelphia in the 2000-01 season finale. The streak was in danger of continuing as the Bulls found themseleves trailing, 87-80, with 4:34 to go.

Marcus Fizer made a short hook shot and 1-of-2 free throws to spark a 10-2 Chicago run. Ron Artest made a layup and, after a basket by Atlanta's Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Fizer made a short baseline jumper to bring Chicago within 89-87 at 2:29.

Artest followed with a pair of free throws to give the Bulls a 90-89 lead with 1:42 left.

Jacque Vaughn reclaimed the lead for Atlanta with a driving layup 51 seconds later. But Mercer responded, coming off a screen to drain a jumper over Chicago native Nazr Mohammed and give the Bulls the lead for good.

Mercer added two free throws with 15 seconds left and the Hawks missed a pair of 3-pointers on their final possession.

"We had an opportunity and had it in good shape and then we got careless," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "They made the plays and got the results. We have a long way to go defensively. We're not stopping people very often."

Jason Terry missed a 3-pointer with six seconds left and Chicago grabbed the rebound, but Mercer's errant pass was stolen by Dion Glover, who missed another 3-pointer as time expired.

"All in all the guys fought, we accomplished our mission and gave ourselves a chance to win," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "The stars lined up for us and it worked out."

"It feels real good," Mercer said. "Hopefully this will give us some confidence. It shows us that we're capable of beating anyone at home and on the road."

Eddie Robinson scored 16 points and Brad Miller added 12 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for the Bulls, who won for the third time in their last seven visits to Atlanta.

"Coach told us were going to win this one and we needed to be smart down the stretch," Robinson said. "That's where we normally fall apart. We have been struggling on the road and Atlanta was a great opportunity to come in here and get a win."

It was Robinson's second game since coming off the injured list and Miller's first since his one-game ban for fighting Shaquille O'Neal.

"I just wanted to get my rhythm back," Robinson said. "I'm 90-something percent right now."

Terry, who scored a career-high 46 points in Tuesday's loss to Dallas, had 25 points and 10 assists. Abdur-Rahim collected 22 and 11 rebounds as Atlanta's season-high losing streak reached five games.

"Nobody is going to feel sorry for us, no one is going to feel sad for us," Abdur-Rahim said. "We just have to play better. There's no excuses. We worked hard and had control of the game and we just didn't take care of our business. We just didn't finish the game."

Mohammed recorded 14 points and 14 rebounds and Vaughn added 11 and seven assists off the bench for the Hawks, who shot just 42 percent (35-of-82).
