Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- After getting a close shave, Dirk Nowitzki made sure his team didn't.

Nowitzki scored 32 points and helped turn back a fourth-quarter rally as the Dallas Mavericks continued their road dominance of the Memphis Grizzlies with a 108-97 victory.

Since entering the NBA in 1999, Nowitzki has worn his blond hair a bit long and shaggy. But the 7-footer from Germany decided to shave his head down to a short nub that barely was visible.

"During warmups, it was in my face," Nowitzki said. "I was actually planning on doing it a little longer ago, but it happened today. I don't really care about hair; it doesn't really matter. I didn't like it before and I don't like it now. But it's easier to handle now, that's for sure. You don't have to spend as much time in front of the mirror. I think I'm gonna keep it short for a while."

"He's been talking about it for a while and he cut it off today," said teammate Steve Nash, who has gotten some grief for his mop.

Asked if he would follow Nowitzki's lead, Nash said, "I look just as silly as Dirk with short hair."

Nowitzki's new look had no effect on his game. He made 9-of-20 shots and 12-of-13 free throws as he eclipsed 30 points for the 13th time this season.

After the Grizzlies had pulled within five points midway through the fourth quarter, Nowitzki drilled a long jumper to trigger a decisive 6-0 burst.

Nash had 20 points and 10 assists for the Mavericks, who improved to 12-1 all-time in road games against the Grizzlies -- 10-1 in Vancouver and 2-0 this season.

"I think we got timely stops," Nash said. "They played fairly well, but we got stops when it really counted, and that was the difference in the game."

Rookie Pau Gasol collected 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have lost two in a row following a three-game winning streak.

The highest-scoring team in the NBA, Dallas held a 21-9 edge in fast-break points

"We failed a little bit and we allowed too many fast-break points and they executed," Gasol said.

A 3-pointer by Jason Williams, who totaled 16 points and eight assists, pulled Memphis within 92-87 with 6:13 remaining. But Nowitzki responded with a 21-footer and Dallas was off and running.

On consecutive possessions, the Mavs slapped the ball away from Stromile Swift. On the first, Nash threw a behind-the-back pass to Adrian Griffin for a layup. On the second, Griffin coasted in for another layup and a 98-87 lead with 4:22 to go.

"We created some turnovers and we got out and ran," Nash said. "That's something our team really flourishes in, the running game. So we try to get out and run a little bit. We're a lot better team when we play that way."

"We took quick shots and let them get back in transition," Grizzlies guard Rodney Buford said. "But we didn't get back. We jogged back. And when that happens, you're not going to win games."

Johnny Newman scored 11 points and Griffin added 10 for Dallas, which shot 48 percent (39-of-82), including 9-of-16 from the arc. The Mavs have won 14 of 18 overall, many of them without injured All-Star guard Michael Finley.

"With Mike out, I'm getting a lot of touches and a lot of shots," Nowitzki said. "But our strength is we all can score."

Buford scored 15 points and fellow reserves Swift and Brevin Knight added 12 apiece for Memphis, which shot 51 percent (38-of-75) but just 5-of-16 from 3-point range.

"I like the Grizzlies," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "They really run good stuff and their coaches do a good job of running a very intricate offense. I steal some of their stufff, that's how good it is. In fact, I put a play in today, watching their stuff, it's so good. And we scored on it. I just think they're a good up-and-coming team."

The Grizzlies played most of the game without rookie swingman Shane Battier, who strained his left hip in the second quarter and did not return. He will have an MRI on Friday.

"Everything goes through Shane, so we're going to have to find a different game plan," Buford said. "He brings a lot of energy and hard work and we have to pick up where he left off."

Dallas took the lead for good at 32-29 on a 3-pointer by Tim Hardaway with 10:51 left in the second quarter. Wang Zhizhi scored all eight of his points in the second period to help the Mavs to a 55-49 halftime lead.

A jumper by Grant Long cut the deficit to 62-61 with 5:39 left in the third quarter before Dallas got out in transition again, putting together a 13-3 run full of fast breaks. Nash scored six points in the surge and a free throw by Greg Buckner made it 75-64 with 2:08 to play.
