Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Without their two best players, the Atlanta Hawks had little hope of holding on to an early lead.

Pat Garrity scored a season-high 23 points as the Orlando Magic dominated the second half en route to a 100-86 victory over the Hawks, who were without Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Jason Terry.

Both Abdur-Rahim and Terry received suspensions prior to the game stemming from their roles in a scuffle during Monday's win over Houston.

Abdur-Rahim, Atlanta's leading scorer and rebounder, was punished three games for throwing punches. Terry, the team's second-leading scorer and best shooter, received a one-game ban for throwing a punch.

"I gave the team the honest speech," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "No Jason Terry, no Abdur-Rahim, we should win this game. We should win the game if we play well and we should win the game if we do not play well."

"We can't use (the suspensions) as an excuse," Hawks forward Cal Bowdler said. "We have not had a full squad basically all year. Of course, losing Shareef and J.T. hurt, but we are NBA players and have to step up when that sort of thing happens."

Despite the absence of 35 percent of their offense, the Hawks led for most of the first two quarters. They were clinging to a 39-38 lead 3:02 before halftime before Garrity made a 3-pointer and a pair of long jumpers consecutively to give the Magic the lead for good.

"(Garrity) had a good game," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "He made every open shot. You have to cover him with a big player, but he can move on the open floor and make shots, so he's difficult to guard."

Orlando had a 47-41 halftime advantage and opened the second quarter on a 12-4 run. Tracy McGrady opened the run with five straight points and Garrity's 3-pointer with 8:46 to go gave the Magic a double-digit lead for good.

Orlando led by as many as 22 in the fourth quarter and cruised to its third win in four games.

McGrady did little scoring but had a solid all-around game with nine points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

Garrity made 9-of-13 shots, including 3-of-5 3-pointers, and Darrell Armstrong was 6-of-8 from the field and scored 15 points.

Don Reid scored a season-high 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting off the bench for the Magic, who shot 56 percent (38-of-68) from the floor and made 8-of-17 from beyond the arc.

"We shot 56 percent and Tracy had nine points and Mike Miller had five," Rivers said. "That is a strange number considering we scored 100 points."

"Don Reid did a fabulous job coming in with a lot of energy and Pat, being Pat, knocking down shots," McGrady said. "If that's what it takes to get guys going, that's what I'm going to do. Penetrate, kick it out to the shooters and let them knock down shots. I didn't have to score tonight."

Jacque Vaughn and Hanno Mottola scored 14 points apiece to lead six players in double figures for the Hawks, who had their five-game winning streak at Orlando snapped.

Reserve Dion Glover and DerMarr Johnson contributed 13 points apiece.

The Magic took a 16-10 lead on Armstrong's jupmer with 6:14 left in the first quarter, but the Hawks responded with 14 straight points. Johnson made three layups during the burst and scored nine points in the quarter.

Atlanta took advantage of nine Orlando turnovers and took a 24-19 lead into the second quarter. The Magic opened the period on a 9-1 run and neither team led by more than three until Garrity took over.

"We opened it up well," Kruger said. "We made a nice little run but we just weren't able to sustain it for a full 48 minutes."
