Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Chucky Atkins tallied 21 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the Detroit Pistons crushed the Atlanta Hawks, 107-90, for their fourth win in five games.

Atkins was 7-of-10 from the field, including 6-of-6 from the arc, for Detroit, which has won consecutive road games for the first time since November 30-December 1. Atkins had 20 of his points through the first three quarters, after which Detroit led by 81-60.

"Sometimes the (Hawks) started double-teaming our big people," Atkins said. "We needed people to step up outside. I was finding shots wide open. I had it going tonight. We are a team when we get good ball movement the ball is going to go in."

Corliss Williamson had 20 points to pace four other Pistons in double figures. Two days after dropping a season-high 40 points in a 104-83 blowout of Minnesota, Jerry Stackhouse shot just 3-of-12 for 14 points but had seven assists.

"It's tough when you see guys basically you are supposed to beat (and) they're not at full strength," Stackhouse said. "It's a game we should have won and we won. You got to be happy about that."

Atlanta played without forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim for the second straight game after he was given a three-game suspension for fighting Houston's Kenny Thomas on Monday. Jason Terry, who was handed a one-game suspension for his involvement in the scuffle, was 5-of-15 for 15 points in his return.

"This is the NBA -- when you are shorthanded it's tough," Terry said. "All you can do is keep working. You go with what you've got."

Nazr Mohammed had 16 points and 14 rebounds to pace Atlanta, who lost for the eighth time in nine games. Dion Glover added 13 points, but he was the only other Atlanta player to reach double figures.

"We just got to go out and play hard," Mohammed said. "We're missing a guy like Reef but you can't use that as an excuse. It's basketball, it's a pride game, you got to go out there and try and outplay your opponent and try to get a win."

"Nazr did what he could do and we didn't give him much help," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "Individually in a game like this you have to reach back and compete like crazy. I think Nazr was doing that."

Detroit led by 55-38 at halftime and never led by less than double figures in the second half. Atkins gave the Pistons their biggest lead, 81-55, on a 3-pointer with 2:14 left in the third quarter.

"It was big that Chucky was hitting those shots," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "That gave us a cushion. I thought he did a really good job on Jason Terry. He, Damon Jones and Jon Barry all contributed to Terry only going for 15 points."

The Pistons shot 55 percent (11-of-20) from 3-point range, while the Hawks made just 2-of-10.

Detroit sank a seaon-high 30-of-33 free throws, including a run of 20 straight midway through the game. Stackhouse, Williamson and Zeljko Rebraca were a combined 24-of-25 from the line.

Atlanta made 20-of-27 free throws.

"We got in the bonus every quarter," Carlisle said. "We're driving the ball, we're being aggressive at both ends. We made some mistakes out there, we did some things a little crazy. As long as the effort is there, that's all I ask."
