Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- One night after seeing his team torched by Allen Iverson, Antoine Walker produced an All-Star effort of his own.

Walker scored 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Paul Pierce added 22 points as the Boston Celtics rebounded from a rough outing to hand the Cleveland Cavaliers their 12th straight loss, 108-101.

Walker, who will team with Iverson in the starting lineup for the Eastern Conference in next month's All-Star Game, made 11-of-24 shots. It is the second selection for Walker, who made the team as a reserve in 1997.

Erick Strickland added 21 points off the bench for Boston, which was burned for 47 points by Iverson in Friday's 106-90 loss. But 24 hours after Philadelphia made all the plays down the stretch, the Celtics were able to capitalize against a Cavaliers squad that fell apart in the final 12 minutes.

"It was a very important win for us," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "We completed nine games in 13 nights in which we didn't get any rest. Our guys have been practicing shooting and Erick has been shooting the ball great for us. You really have to credit Antoine for finding these guys, he really took what was there and ran with it. That's probably the reason we won the game."

Andre Miller had a triple-double for Cleveland with 25 points, 17 assists and 10 rebounds. It was his second triple-double of the season and third career.

Former Celtic Bryant Stith scored a season-high 20 points in his first start of the season, but the Cavaliers had their longest losing streak in 21 years extended. Cleveland lost 19 straight games to conclude the 1980-81 season.

"That was a great effort and we had great energy," Cavs coach John Lucas said. "We just can't catch any breaks. We can't catch a break on calls or on 3-point shooters. Guys (Strickland) shooting 27 percent on 3-point shots make 3-pointers tonight and that just killed us. They kept making shots and we kept making mistakes."

"Twelve losses in a row is tough," Miller said. "We have to find ways to win with different lineups. It has come to a point where you have to dig deep."

The Cavs led 82-78 following a 3-pointer 19 seconds into fourth quarter, but Strickland sank a 3-pointer off a feed from Vitaly Potapenko that ignited an 18-5 run.

Walker had eight points in the burst, capping it with a layup for a 96-87 lead with 5:14 left. Stith and Strickland heated up, with Stith burying a pair of 3-pointers while Strickland had a 3-pointer and layup.

Cleveland never got closer than six the rest of the way.

Boston made 54.5 percent (12-of-22) of its shots in the final quarter while Cleveland missed 12-of-18.

The Celtics seemed poised to put away the Cavaliers, leading 68-61 with 6:41 to go in the third quarter. But Stith got hot, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers as Cleveland ran off nine consecutive points to take the lead.

Stith was 5-of-8 from 3-point range while Strickland was 6-of-9 from the arc. Strickland surapssed his career high of five 3-pointers set on Wednesday.

"That's what I did for Boston last year," Stith said. "If you can dance, you can play basketball. It is all about rhythm, then you establish confidence. This is the first time I have played significant minutes this season and it really felt good to be out there."

"That's probably the best game I have had." Strickland said. "I wasn't hesitating, waiting for the defense to catch up. I was working on a quick release and was able to get shots off before the defense got there."

Boston improved to 17-2 this season when scoring 100 points.
