Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Gary Payton turned in another All-Star performance on the same day he was overlooked by the fans.

Payton collected 27 points and 11 assists and Brent Barry scored six of his 22 points in the final three minutes as the Seattle SuperSonics posted a 96-86 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

The All-Star Game starters were announced Saturday, but Payton was not among them despite leading all Western Conference point guards in scoring and assists. Instead, the fans voted in Houston's Steve Francis, who has missed 19 games this season due to injury.

"I've been an All-Star too long," said Payton, who likely will be chosen to his eighth All-Star Game as a reserve. "I just play basketball, I don't care about no All-Stars. I play every night the same way."

After Payton was snubbed, he scored 11 points in the first quarter and 19 in the first half, but it was Barry who made the two biggest plays down the stretch.

Jalen Rose's basket with 4:13 left gave the Pacers an 84-83 lead, but they would not make another shot. Barry responded with a three-point play to give Seattle the lead for good and spark a 12-2 game-ending run.

"We stopped doing the little things," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "Every now and then individual agendas creep into the team and when that happens, we don't win. The last five minutes we stopped playing together as a team."

"The fourth quarter seemes like it is our downfall and I don't have an answer for it," said Indiana forward Jonathan Bender, who scored 15 points. "The coaching staff stays on us about this, but it's something we have to do."

After a fadeaway jumper by Rashard Lewis, Jeff Foster brought Indiana within 88-86 on a pair of free throws with 2:06 to go. But Barry nailed a 3-pointer 84 seconds later to extend the lead.

Payton and Lewis each sank a pair of free throws in the final 20 seconds as the Sonics notched their fourth win in five games.

"I think we're realizing now the fruits of our labor over the past 1 1/2 months," Barry said. "It's been real encouraging the was we've played (lately). We starting to stretch teams out and we have become pretty effective."

Lewis finished with 13 points and 11 rebound as Seattle completed a 3-1 road trip and swept the season series from Indiana for the first time since the 1997-98 season.

"Our team is starting to gel and we just went through a lot of road games and were able to take care of business," Payton said. "Now we've got to take care of business at home."

The Sonics held a 43-39 rebounding advantage and grabbed 12 offensive boards, leading to 16 second-chance points, including seven in the fourth quarter.

"Rebounding was the big difference in the game, we had a lot of big rebounds," Payton said. "We usually don't do a good job of that, but we did tonight."

Jermaine O'Neal had 19 points and nine rebounds and Foster had 16 and 12 for Indiana, which committed 13 turnovers leading to 20 points for Seattle.

"Tonight we were not only fighting the Sonics, we were fighting ourselves," Thomas said. "We're not patient enough to keep doing what works."

Indiana's Reggie Miller had 16 points and seven assists. But Rose struggled, scoring only six points on 3-of-13 shooting.
