Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning collected 23 points and eight rebounds and Eddie Jones scored 20 points as the Miami Heat won for the seventh time in eight games, 90-77, over the New Jersey Nets.

Mourning scored eight points in the first quarter, when Miami dictated the tempo and grabbed a 29-16 lead that it never relinquished. Mourning made 4-of-5 shots and Jones added seven points in the first quarter, when the Heat shot a sizzling 71 percent (12-of-17).

Miami, which had a season-high six-game winning streak snapped by Thursday's 92-87 loss at Orlando, improved to just 7-13 at home.

"We made a concerted effort to play for 48 minutes," Mourning said. "One of our biggest problems has been our mental lapses in the second half. We start games strong and establish ourself. We need to maintain it for the whole duration of the game. Across the board, everybody sustained the energy and effort. We were moving the ball, not standing around."

Rod Strickland had 11 points and seven assists and Brian Grant tied his season high with 12 rebounds as the Heat held a commanding 45-27 advantage on the boards. Grant also scored nine points.

Kenyon Martin scored 19 points and Kerry Kittles added 14 for New Jersey, which wrapped up a 2-2 road trip. Martin and Kittles combined to make 13-of-25 shots, but the rest of the team shot just 35 percent (16-of-46).

"They were holding and grabbing and everything, but I'm not complaining," Martin said. "If that's the way they want to play, that's the way we should have played. They made shots early."

Keith Van Horn, who scored 19 points to lead six players in double figures in New Jersey's 104-95 home win over Miami on January 8, missed 9-of-12 shots Saturday and had just two rebounds.

"They were far more aggressive than us and right from the start it affected our cuts on offense, our rebounding and we were never able to recover from that," Van Horn said.

Nets center Todd MacCulloch was overmatched by Mourning and had just two points and three rebounds while collecting four fouls in 16 minutes.

Miami jumped out to an 8-0 lead on Mourning's layup just under two minutes into the game. New Jersey missed three shots and committed a turnover before Kittles finally hit a jumper with 9:20 to go. But Mourning answered with a dunk 22 seconds later and Jones followed with a 20-footer to push Miami's lead to 12-2 with 8:12 left.

"I really believe if we focus in on what we're supposed to do that we're capable of playing that type of game against a quality team," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "It was one of our best focusing games. The only way you can stop their offense is you can't let them run it with ease."

Jason Kidd had three of his nine assists in the first quarter, but the Nets never got their offense flowing. New Jersey committed five turnovers and made just 7-of-18 shots.

"In order to defend a very good offense you have to be one step ahead of it," Riley added. "You have to get up and into the ball. In the first quarter, that is what we were going to do. I thought our team as a team defended very well."

The Nets could not bring the deficit under double digits in the second period. Mourning added six points in the second, including his 12,000th career point on a three-point play that gave the Heat a 43-26 bulge 4:04 before the break.

New Jersey closed the first half with an 8-2 spurt to draw within 44-34. Kidd opened the third with a 3-pointer and steal that set up Van Horn's two free throws, making it 44-39.

But New Jersey got no closer as former Net Kendall Gill responded with a jumper from the right baseline to ignite a 10-0 surge.
