Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones scored a career-high 37 points, including the go-ahead basket in overtime, as the Miami Heat defeated the Denver Nuggets, 100-94, for their eighth win in 10 games.

Raef LaFrentz's sixth 3-pointer of the contest gave Denver a 92-91 lead with 2:20 left in the extra session. But Jones scored on a thunderous baseline dunk, was fouled and sank the free throw to put Miami ahead for good.

Brian Grant made a pair of free throws with 1:24 remaining to extend the lead to 96-92. Calbert Cheaney converted a layup with 48 seconds left to get the Nuggets within 96-94, but Kendall Gill hit a jumper and made a breakaway layup with 9.5 seconds left after collecting the long rebound of Voshon Lenard's jumper.

Miami played without center Alonzo Mourning, who was named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team earlier in the day but missed his second straight contest while battling the flu.

Jones was 13-of-24 and broke his previous career best of 35 points, set at Sacramento on November 4, 1997, when he played for the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Eddie Jones was great, he was outstanding," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "He made every play he needed to make and kept making one more play and one more play. Great players make great plays, and Eddie Jones did that tonight."

Grant added 11 points and 14 rebounds for Miami, which had not had a player score more than 29 points in a game this season. It was the Heat's 12th straight victory over the Nuggets since March 3, 1995.

LaFrentz tied a season high with 30 points and Nick Van Exel added 15 and seven assists to lead Denver, which lost for the ninth time in 12 games. Zendon Hamilton added 11 points and 11 rebounds but could not prevent the Nuggets from dropping to 2-5 in their last seven at home.

"They're well-coached and play hard," LaFrentz said. "You can use any excuse, but we need to execute down the stretch and play together as a team. It's another one that slipped away from us. Whatever you want to attribute it to, it's still another `L.'"

After Jones hit a reverse layup and the ensuing free throw with 39 seconds left to give Miami an 87-86 lead, Van Exel drilled a 3-pointer with 19 seconds to go.

But Jones scored on a driving layup with 13 seconds remaining to tie it at 89-89, and Van Exel missed a potential game-winning jumper from the right baseline just before the buzzer.

"I couldn't believe that at the end I got to the basket and they didn't run anybody to me," Jones said. "I really can't believe they didn't foul me harder than they did."

"It was a lack of execution down the stretch," Denver coach Mike Evans said. "We didn't make shots when we needed to. We didn't shoot well at the free-throw line either."

Denver shot 61 percent from the line (14-of-23), while Miami was a perfect 17-of-17.

Miami led by as many as 13 points in the first half and took a 50-39 advantage into intermission. The lead was 59-47 after Eddie House hit a jumper with 6:27 left in the third quarter. But Denver scored the next 15 points, a run that was capped by a layup by Ryan Bowen with 2:18 to go in the period.

"In the third quarter, we mixed up our defenses," Evans said. "We were able to dictate who was going to take the shot. We played better in the second half; that didn't surprise me."

The Nuggets took a 68-65 edge into the fourth quarter but never led by more than four points over the final 12 minutes.
