Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- In a duel between All-Star point guards, Steve Nash was best down the stretch.

Nash scored 15 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter as the Dallas Mavericks capped the best January in franchise history with a 95-91 victory over the Houston Rockets.

The Rockets' Steve Francis is the starting point guard for the Western Conference in next Sunday's All-Star Game and will be backed up by Nash. Through three quarters Francis displayed why he got the fans' vote while Nash showed in the final period what earned him his first All-Star appearance.

The Mavericks had their largest lead, 57-40, midway through the third quarter before the Rockets carried a 33-12 run into the fourth. Francis scored 15 of his 30 points during the burst, which gave Houston a 73-69 edge with 8:35 remaining.

"We're both very competitive and we both know what each other can do," Francis said. "We both knew that when we both get it going and are trying to carry our team, that we've got to match each other because we're both tough to stop in those situations."

Nash responded with a 3-pointer and a jumper to give the Mavs the lead. The teams exchanged the lead twice and were tied three times before Adrian Griffin gave Dallas the lead for good, 81-79, on a jumper with 4:26 to go.

Nash made three jump shots and three free throws in the final 3:35 as the Mavericks pulled away and finished January at 12-4.

"Steve was great, he was just tough to stop," Francis said. "He really got hot there in the second half and kept his team in it."

"We were just struggling a little bit and we weren't making a lot of shots," Nash said. "I really felt good and really had to ride my touch tonight. I felt like I was going to make shots so I just wanted to get a lot of shots up and it paid off."

Dallas had never won 12 games in January and matched its best record for month, tying its 12-4 mark in March 1987.

Juwan Howard had 14 points and a career-high 16 rebound and Dirk Nowitzki collected 13 points and 10 boards for Dallas, which shot just 43 percent (41-of-95) but committed only six turnovers.

The Mavericks made just 6-of-21 3-pointers and were nearly as bad from the line, where they sank only 7-of-15 attempts.

Kelvin Cato had 18 points and 15 rebounds and rookie Eddie Griffin recorded 10 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks as the Rockets failed in a bid for their third straight win.

"We were very competitive and I think we could play with anyone in the league," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "The Mavs made some plays down the stretch and we had just a little bit of a lull where I think we made a couple of wrong decisions. It is amazing how we keep hanging in there and hanging in there, but we have to find a way to get to the next level."

Cuttino Mobley scored 15 points before fouling out with seven seconds left and Kenny Thomas had 12 points for Houston, which shot 41 percent (32-of-77) and made 6-of-23 3-pointers.

Nash scored seven points and Howard added six in the first quarter as the Mavericks jumped out to a 25-17 lead. Dallas had a 26-22 edge 2:07 into the second quarter before scoring 16 of the next 19 points.

Griffin scored five points during the stretch and Tim Hardaway chipped in five of his nine. Griffin's layup gave the Mavs a 42-25 cushion with 3:17 left.

Dallas had a 46-33 halftime lead.
