Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jason Terry scored 30 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 27 as the Atlanta Hawks snapped a six-game losing streak by rallying for a 101-94 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

After Elton Brand made a layup with 5:59 left in the third quarter to give the Clippers a 63-50 lead, the Hawks went on a 29-6 run capped by a 3-pointer from Terry 45 seconds into the fourth quarter. Terry and Abdur-Rahim combined for 21 points during the burst.

"They just hit a flurry of shots," Brand said. "I don't think we chased them off the screens well. Abdur-Rahim really hit some big shots. He really came to play that third quarter. Jason Terry and DerMarr Johnson hit some open shots and really put it to us."

"It wasn't just making shots," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "We had to get stops on the other end. We went from down 11 to up a couple real fast. But more importantly, on the other end, we were getting stops."

Los Angeles whittled a 10-point deficit to 90-86 on a jumper by Earl Boykins with 4:41 left, but Hanno Mottola and Jacque Vaughn countered with layups and the Clippers got no closer than four points thereafter.

"It's a big win because we are on a six-game losing streak," Abdur-Rahim said. "After a while it gets kind of mental. Guys' confidence can get down as far as winning games. You need some wins to build the morale back up."

Johnson added 11 points and Ira Newble 10 for Atlanta, which had not scored more than 90 points during its losing streak. The Hawks had lost 12 of 13 games entering the contest and had been defeated by an average of 18.5 points during its six-game skid.

"We needed it," Terry said. "This team has been searching for a win the last couple of weeks. Tonight we found it. It's no secret -- hard work. Defense has been our weakness all year long. But when we are able to stop people, we've always had success."

Paced by Terry (4-of-6) and Johnson (3-of-5), the Hawks sank 64 percent (9-of-14) of their 3-pointers.

"That's what they need me to do," Johnson said. "They're not going to be out there running plays for me. That is what JT (Jason Terry) and Shareef do. When they get double-teamed, I spot up and try to knock down my shots."

Eric Piatkowski scored 22 points to pace the Clippers, who fell to 2-2 on their season-high seven-game road trip. Brand had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Michael Olowokandi added 18 and 14 for Los Angeles, which fell to 5-16 away from the Staples Center this season.

"We're going to have to find a way to stop doing this," said Piatkowski. "We beat the tough teams and the games that we should win are the games we are losing. The games we lose, we usually get up 10 points. We're not putting teams away."

The Clippers shot 50 percent (21-of-42) in the first half en route to a 51-42 advantage. Piatkowski scored 15 points.

"The third quarter, they outplayed us," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "That was the difference in the game. It's typical of our team. We take two steps forward and one step back. Until we play with consistency, we're probably going to go through that for the rest of the season."

Without the injured Corey Maggette and Lamar Odom, the Clippers' normally deep bench was outscored by Cleveland's reserves, 38-15.

"We needed to win this game tonight," Brand said. "We felt like we should have won this game tonight. We just beat Dallas and San Antonio. Atlanta is a good team, but we felt like we should have won this game."
