Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning is feeling better, and so are the Miami Heat.

Mourning scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and the Heat pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 94-83 victory over the undermanned New York Knicks.

The Heat have won 10 of their last 12 games and are close to moving out of the Atlantic Division basement. Miami (18-28) is within one-half game of the sixth-place Knicks, who have lost back-to-back games after a season-high four-game winning streak.

"We've still got a lot of fight in us, regardless of what people might say," Mourning said. "Our commitment to the game is still there. We haven't forgotten how to play this game. It's just a matter of getting back to a level of consistency again with hard work."

The Knicks played without center Marcus Camby, who was placed on the injured list Sunday with a torn muscle and bone contusion of the right hip suffered in Friday's loss to the Indiana Pacers.

"We can't regress as individuals or as a team," said the Knicks' Allan Houston. "He is a key player but you don't want to put so much on your shoulders where you're trying to be something you're not. We have to raise our level of intensity up and just play as hard as we can."

Mourning, who was playing his second game since missing a pair of contests with the flu, took advantage of the gaping hole in the middle, as did several of his teammates.

Eddie Jones scored 18 points, Jimmy Jackson 15, and Rod Strickland 14 for the Heat. Jackson and Brian Grant each grabbed 10 reboubnds.

"I think it took time for everyone to believe in each other to get that chemistry and everyone else on the same page," Jones said. "Earlier in the season, we played a great three quarters and then in the fourth quarter we started struggling. I thought tonight our defense was pretty good and we just toughened up and made plays down the stretch."

Houston scored 28 points for the Knicks, including 10 straight New York points in the fourth quarter that cut the lead to 82-78.

But Mourning hit a free throw and Jones sank a pair of free throws to make it a seven-point game and end the New York threat.

"During the winning streak, there was intensity out at the right time," Houston said. "Now I think the intensity dropped at the wrong time."

Kurt Thomas had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Clarence Weatherspoon, who started in place of Camby, grabbed 16 boards.

Miami scored seven straight points in the fourth quarter to build an 80-70 lead with 6:44 left. Jackson scored on a layup and Eddie House sank a pair of jumpers.

Houston brought the Knicks back with his spurt, capped by a 16-foot jumper that cut the lead to four.

Latrell Sprewell, playing with a sprained ankle, scored 16 points for the Knicks, but did not have a basket in the second half until his short jumper made it 85-80. Jones answered with a turnaroud 17-foot jumper with 2:14 left and the Heat made seven of eight free throws down the stretch.

"We allowed them to upgrade their succession in scoring in the second half," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "They shot better than us and outrebounded us."

The teams exchanged leads often in a competitive first half with no team holding an advntage greater than five points. Sprewell sank a jumper with 10:11 left in the half to make it 28-23.

The Knicks held a 44-40 halftime lead.
