Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers attempted 101 shots, made 14 3-pointers, had seven players score in double figures and set a Conseco Fieldhouse scoring record. But they could not defeat Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks.

Nowitzki made two free throws with 3.6 seconds left in double overtime as the Mavericks posted a wild 141-140 victory over the Pacers.

Both teams surpassed the NBA season-high total of 133 points, set by Sacramento against Phoenix on December 23 and matched by Dallas at the Los Angeles Clippers on January 26.

Jonathan Bender, who missed a pair from the line with 8.7 seconds left and the Pacers ahead, 140-139, attempted a turnaround jumper from the left baseline just before the buzzer. But the shot hit the side of the backboard and the Mavericks escaped with their sixth straight road win.

"This was the wildest game I've played in," Bender said. "It was fun but not with the outcome. It would have been 10 times funner with the win."

"It was kind of fun to watch," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas added. "I thought both teams played well, but we lost and they won."

Bender was forced to take the last shot because the Mavericks double-teamed Miller, the NBA's all-time leader in 3-pointers attempted and made.

"He was not going to get the ball," Dallas coach Don Nelson said of Miller. "We had him double-played, overplayed, waylayed and parlayed."

Nowitzki had 38 points, making 14-of-15 free throws, and a season-high 17 rebounds for the Mavs, who swept the season series from the Pacers for the first time since 1995-96.

"I'm not tired; it was an emotional game," said Nowitzki, who played 53 minutes. "The emotions were flowing and it was just a fun game to be in. It was even more win to win."

Michael Finley was 11-of-12 from the line and had 31 points and 14 rebounds. Finley played 57 minutes, two more than Milwaukee's Sam Cassell registered in a double-overtime loss to New York on January 26 that had been the NBA high this season.

Dallas finished 38-of-42 from the line, while Indiana made 28-of-37. But the Pacers missed several crucial free throws down the stretch and in the extra sessions.

"This is a tough one two swallow," Indiana guard Jalen Rose said. "I'm not into moral victories. We just have to step up there and make at least one free throw to make them have to make a shot. And we can't do it. That was the game."

With the game tied at 131-131 and 5.4 seconds left in overtime, Indiana rookie Jamaal Tinsley missed a pair of free throws.

Steve Nash and Jeff Foster fought for the loose ball, and Nash was called for a foul. But Foster missed both attempts from the line and Nowitzki grabbed the rebound and called timeout.

But Nash did not get off a shot in the paint in time and the game went to a second overtime.

Rose led Indiana with 33 points before fouling out in double overtime. Austin Croshere matched a career high with 32 points -- 18 more than his previous season high -- and had 12 rebounds. Reggie Miller added 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and Tinsley finished with 18 and 19 assists.

"You can't dwell on this because a loss is a loss and nobody is out there to lose basketball games," Tinsley said. "You might say it could have been luck of the draw, but free throws lost it for us."

Dallas led 112-102 before Croshere hit a 3-pointer with 3:38 left in regulation to start an 18-8 closing kick. After Nash sank a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to give Dallas a 110-107 lead, Croshere pump-faked Nowitzki and hit an open 3-pointer with just over a second left to tie it.

Nash hit a runner from the right baseline, but the referees ruled he shot it after the buzzer.

"Everyone who saw it on TV said that the clock started before I caught the ball," Nash said. "I caught the ball, I didn't even pump-fake and I took a dribble and then shot it. If that takes 1.3 seconds, oh well."

Indiana, which has not beaten a team with a winning record since defeating San Antonio on January 4, shot 49 percent (49-of-101), including 42 percent from the arc (14-of-33).

But Dallas shot 50 percent (46-of-93) overall and was 11-of-21 from the arc.

The Pacers played without center Jermaine O'Neal, who suffered a sprained left ankle in Sunday's loss at Washington.

"We are all pretty banged up right now and it's given me an opportunity to play a little more," Croshere said. "This game allowed me to play through mistakes that I may not have been able to play through in other games. I only hope that when everyone is back that the rotation will still be there so I can get some meaningful minutes."

Indiana is 1-7 without O'Neal but 25-25 overall after its final game before the All-Star break.

"Considering what has happened to us, (our record) is good," Thomas said. "For our guys to keep hanging in and scratching, after losing Al (Harrington) and Jermaine and Jamaal being injured, .500 at the break is a good sign."
