Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse led a balanced attack with 17 points as the Detroit Pistons dumped the Los Angeles Clippers, 105-92, to win their third straight game entering the All-Star break.

Stackhouse led seven players in double figures. Reserves Damon Jones and Corliss Williamson added 15 apiece for Detroit, which was victorious for the seventh time in eight games to improve to 26-21 before the five-day play stoppage.

"Last year, we only won 23 (actually 32) games all season," said Jones, who sank 5-of-8 3-pointers. "It's wonderful. It's really pumping all of us up. Our goal was to make the playoffs. Now we're going into the break and I think we're tied for fourth. I have never been in a situation like this."

After Quentin Richardson hit a layup with 10:47 left to give the Clippers a 76-73 lead, Detroit went on an 22-6 run capped by a three-point play by Williamson with 5:33 left. Williamson had nine points during the burst.

Los Angeles got no closer than eight points thereafter.

"(Jones) was key off the bench, not only because he was making a lot of shots, but I thought defensively he was around, he was scooping up balls," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "He was making some things happen."

Detroit shot 53 percent (42-of-80) from the field and limited Los Angeles to 41 percent (36-of-88).

The Pistons made 10-of-20 3-pointers while the Clippers hit just 4-of-14.

Detroit led 24-17 after one quarter, but Los Angeles scored 33 points in the second period to take a 50-49 lead at the break. The Clippers held a narrow 72-71 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

"We came in and picked it up big time in the second half and put it to them," Stackhouse said. "We put a real number on them defensively. They were shooting almost 50 percent at the break and then at the end of the game, they were right at 40 percent."

Clippers forward Elton Brand, who was named to the Western Conference All-Star team earlier Thursday in place of the injured Shaquille O'Neal, had 25 points and 12 rebounds.

"Their bench really stepped up and really hit some shots," Brand said. "They fought back hard and took the lead. Detroit's a pretty solid ballclub."

Paced by Jones and Williamson, the Pistons' bench outscored the Clippers' reserves, 49-24.

Jeff McInnis added 23 points and Corey Maggette 18 for the Clippers, who enter the break at 25-26 after going 3-4 on a season-high road trip. They are 6-18 away from the Staples Center.

"They did to us what we did to them the last time we played them," said Clippers coach Alvin Gentry, who formerly coached Detroit. "They were really good the fourth quarter. They made all the plays, their bench was terrific, you have to give them a lot of credit.

Los Angeles had defeated Detroit in three previous matchups, including an 82-77 win at the Staples Center on December 16.
