Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Sam Cassell put his money where his mouth was.

Cassell celebrated his new contract extension with 29 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds, leading the Milwaukee Bucks to a 107-103 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Ray Allen also scored 29 points and made some big plays down the stretch for the Bucks, who trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half, then blew a 13-point lead before snapping a two-game losing streak.

In the fifth year of a six-year, $21 million contract, Cassell signed an extension Thursday that he said last week was worth $17 million over three years. He had been unhappy with his deal for some time and was not shy about letting anyone know about it.

"I play basketball, the money don't matter," Cassell said. "It's not that big of a difference anyway. But my family wanted me to sign it. If I didn't sign, I'd have been leaving, and they wouldn't have Sam Cassell, and they wouldn't have Jason Kidd and they wouldn't have Gary Payton, and then George (coach George Karl) would leave and you'd be back to the same old Bucks."

Perhaps bouyed by further financial security, Cassell had one of his best games of the season. He made 11-of-21 shots, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

Allen, who is headed to the All-Star Game, scored six points in the final 2 1/2 minutes. His free throws gave the Bucks the lead for good at 97-95 and he had a driving layup, steal and two more from the line that widened the advantage to 104-99 with 15 seconds to go.

Michael Redd scored 15 points for the Bucks (28-18), who held their lead over Toronto in the Central Division by sweeping the season series from the Grizzlies.

"It's a W and a good time to get away from each other and enjoy family and friends," Karl said. "I'm very satisfied with where we are, but I'm worried with how we are playing."

"We'll come back stronger and play hard after the break," Allen said.

Rookie Pau Gasol had 30 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, which was coming off a home win over Utah but failed in a bid for its first winning streak in nearly a month. At 14-35, the Grizzlies have the worst record in the Western Conference.

"We are playing good basketball," Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe said. "We are just playing well, with a lot of pride, and together. We have been right there in games. I'm proud that we are playing hard. We continue to keep the focus."

A jumper by Rodney Buford pulled Memphis into a 95-95 tie with 2:44 left before Allen's free throws. Anthony Mason made a steal and free throw and Glenn Robinson's jumper gave Milwaukee a 100-95 lead with 2:08 to go.

Two free throws each from rookie Shane Battier and Brevin Knight cut the deficit to one point with 38 seconds remaining. Allen scored on a drive, then made a steal and was fouled. His two free throws gave the Bucks a five-point bulge and they held on.

"It took four quarters to get the win and we're glad to get any win right now," Allen said.

Mason collected 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists and Robinson scored 10 points for the Bucks, who recovered from a slow start to shoot 51 percent (41-of-81).

"We were anxious to play and we had not played in a while, and it showed early," Allen said. "But in the second quarter, we got into a rhythm and got good shots and knocked them down."

Knight had 24 points and 10 assists and Battier added 19 and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot 47 percent (39-of-83).

The Grizzlies scored the first 11 points and opened a 29-17 lead late in the first quarter. Cassell scored 13 points in a 42-point second quarter as the Bucks stormed to a 61-50 lead at halftime.
