Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse scored 22 points and the Detroit Pistons used a late surge to defeat the slumping New Jersey Nets, 85-80.

Stackhouse scored six points over the final 2 1/2 minutes as the Pistons erased a 78-75 deficit with a 10-2 closing burst to gain their fifth straight road win.

"We have had games like this on the road where the home team comes back and takes the lead," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "But we hung in there, executed, got some buckets and some stops when we needed them."

After Stackhouse's two free throws with 2:35 left made it 78-77, Damon Jones nailed a 3-pointer that put the Pistons on top for good with 2:02 to go.

New Jersey, mired in its first three-game losing streak of the season, committed nine of its 21 turnovers in the final quarter and managed just one bucket in the final three minutes.

Jason Kidd fell just short of a triple-double with 14 rebounds, 13 assists and eight points, but shot only 2-of-18 from the field.

"I thought Jason was just being Jason," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "If other guys aren't getting it done, he is trying to get it done. I can't get mad at a guy that is trying to win."

"This is a learning experience," Kidd said. "You have to understand that this is a young team that has just been put together. We just didn't execute, we just didn't take care of the ball."

The Eastern Conference-leading Nets have lost two in a row at home for the first time this season.

Kenyon Martin, the Nets' leading scorer, sat out the second half with a bruised right forearm he suffered dunking in the second quarter.

Clifford Robinson scored 12 points for Detroit, which shot 43 percent (32-of-74) from the field and won despite committing 23 turnovers.

The Nets led 23-16 after the first quarter and went ahead, 29-20, on Keith Van Horn's jumper with 8:24 left in the second quarter.

"We got off to a little bit of a rough start in the second quarter," Carlisle said. "You knew that they were going to make a run."

But it was the Pistons' turn for a run, using a 26-10 surge to take a 46-39 halftime edge. Corliss Williamson scored seven of his 11 points in the run as Detroit hit 63 percent of its shots in the second quarter.

Van Horn scored 26 points and Kerry Kittles added 22 for the Nets, who shot 36 percent (29-of-80) from the field and made just 14-of-23 foul shots.

"They are a hard team to guard because we're a team that likes to look at the ball," Stackhouse said. "We have guys sagging and looking at the ball while they have guys cutting. They had a few back-door plays on us but late in the game we really shut them down."

New Jersey chipped away in the third, using a 20-8 burst to take a 63-61 lead on Kidd's jumper with 13 seconds left in the third quarter. The Nets built a 71-63 lead on Van Horn's 3-pointer 4:04 into the final quarter before the Pistons started their comeback.
