Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Bryon Russell added 14 points as the Utah Jazz continued their domination of the Philadelphia 76ers with a 98-91 victory.

John Stockton and Jarron Collins each added 11 points as the Jazz improved to 2-2 on their franchise-high nine-game road trip. They also bested the Sixers for the 18th time in their last 22 meetings.

All-Star Allen Iverson, the NBA's leading scorer, collected 34 points but was just 9-of-27 from the field -- including a 2-of-13 performance in the first half. Iverson did almost half his scoring from the foul line, where he went 16-of-19.

"We made him take tough shots," Malone said. "We had to make him work and run off screens. That's our game plan. He scored 34 points, but he earned them."

"It was disappointing, we wanted to win," Iverson said. "We left on a good note, we just didn't return on one. It's a bad feeling."

In two losses against Utah this season, Iverson has made a combined 16-of-52 shots from the field.

"If you expected to see two really hungry teams, I didn't see that in us," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "We had five assists in the first half and ended up with 12 for the game. That's not basketball."

Leading 48-46 in the third quarter, Utah used a 14-5 run to take control. Russell contributed a pair of 3-pointers in the run, his second giving the Jazz a 60-51 lead with 6:19 remaining. Malone sank a pair of free throws to cap the run.

The Jazz shot 46 percent (37-of-80) from the field and controlled the boards, outrebounding Philadelphia, 49-30. It was just the 13th time the 76ers were outrebounded this season.

Derrick Coleman had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Eric Snow added 14 points for the 76ers, who shot 42 percent (28-of-67) from the field and converted on 35-of-41 from the foul line. They were shut out from 3-point range, however, misfiring on all eight attempts.

Philadelphia trailed most of the first half and was behind, 46-42 at the break. After Stockton opened the third quarter with a basket, jumpers by Iverson and Snow brought the Sixers as close as 48-46.

But the Jazz were up to the challenge. Russell drained a long 3-pointer and, after two free throws by Iverson, Collins and Stockton hit jumpers for a 55-48 lead. Iverson sank 1-of-2 from the line but Stockton scored and Russell hit again from long range before Malone's two free throws.

Therafter, Philadelphia was unable to mount a serious charge, falling behind by as many as 18 points before creeping back late in the game. The Sixers pulled within 94-87 on a pair of free throws by Coleman with 87 seconds left, but could get no closer.

"We had no effort. Maybe late in the game when the game was over," Brown said. "We didn't match their effort at all. We got murdered on the boards, couldn't guard the perimeter and got beat on dribble penetration the whole night."
