Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Eric Piatkowski scored 15 of his career-high 36 points in the second quarter as the Los Angeles Clippers rolled to a 119-110 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Piatkowski went 11-of-16 from the field and 9-of-9 from the free throw line. In the second quarter, he made all five of his shots as Los Angeles outscored Dallas, 39-24, in the period.

"Piatkowski was in there the whole time and he had it going," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "He's capable of doing that. Jeff (McInnis) did a great job of finding him and he knocked down the shots."

"Piatkowski was the man for us today," McInnis said. "He was feeling it out there and he hit a lot of good shots."

After Michael Finley gave the Mavericks a two-point lead with a pair of free throws with 5:52 left in the second, Darius Miles tied the game, 47-47, with a dunk and Piatkowski gave the Clippers the lead for good with a driving layup with 5:01 left.

"After I got a couple of shots, they (the Mavericks) started to play their zone and it was kind of lose so I was able to get some good looks and when I hit some shots, I got into a zone and they just started falling for me," Piatkowski said.

Dallas coach Don Nelson did not expect such a performance from Piatkowski.

"Not against us. He can have nights like that, but I thought we would find him and keep him down. You have to give him credit. He still got off."

Los Angeles continued its 21-9 run to the end of the quarter to take a 68-56 advantage into halftime. The Clippers shot 68 percent (15-of-22) in the period while the Mavs were 8-of-25 (32 percent).

Dallas cut its deficit to single digits on two occasions, the last time when Dirk Nowitzki hit a 3-pointer with 7:59 in the third that pulled the Mavs within, 78-69, but Los Angeles answered with a 9-3 spurt.

Corey Maggette added 21 points and McInnis had 20 and a career-high 15 assists for the Clippers, who won for only the second time in their last six games.

"It's a great game today but it was the team who won the game," McInnis said. "I was just playing, trying to help the Clippers get a win. I didn't know how many assists I had. I just played to win the game and beat Dallas."

Los Angeles snapped a six-game losing streak to Dallas at home, despite playing without guard Quentin Richardson, who sat out with a sprained foot.

The Clippers set a season high for points, surpassing a 117-100 win over the Mavs on January 29 that stopped a 12-game slide against Dallas.

Finley scored 23 points, Juwan Howard contributed 19 and Dirk Nowitzki had 18 and 10 rebounds but the Mavericks dropped consecutive games for the first time since January 3-5.

"I would say we didn't play our best game but they played great hitting shots as the clock ran down and they made a lot of transition baskets," Nowitzki said. "They played well all the way through tonight's game."

The Clippers controlled Dallas' top two leading scorers. Nowitzki entered the contest averaging 24.4 points per game while starting point guard Steve Nash, who scores 19.6 points per game, tallied 16 and dished out eight assists.

"I thought we did a great job on Nash," Gentry said. "He is the heart and soul of that team."

"I had some good looks in the first half," Nowitzki said. "To me, I had a bad game. I couldn't find a rhythm out there tonight and as a shooter, if you can't get in a rhythm, then your shots are going to be off and that's what happened to me tonight."

Nash broke a 6-6 tie with a 3-pointer with 8:40 left in the first quarter, igniting a 9-1 run.

Tim Hardaway had eight points and Wang Zhizhi contributed seven for the Mavs, who shot 43 percent (41-of-96) in the game, including 8-of-18 from 3-point range.

Michael Olowokandi collected 15 points and 11 rebounds and Elton Brand had only nine points but pulled down nine rebounds for Los Angeles, which shot 52 percent, including a 62.5 percent mark (10-of-16) from beyond the arc.
