Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- After having trouble scoring over the last six minutes of regulation, the San Antonio Spurs found a way to get in done in the last 60 seconds of overtime.

Tim Duncan's basket with 36.3 seconds left in the extra period snapped a tie and lifted the Spurs to a 99-93 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

It was San Antonio's 17th straight win over the Grizzlies, a streak that dates to February 12, 1997. The Spurs are 22-3 all time against the Memphis franchise.

Duncan took a pass from Antonio Daniels and, with Grizzlies' rookie Pau Gasol's hand in his face, put the ball off the glass and in to ignite a game-ending 6-0 spurt.

Duncan scored 23 points, leading four players in double figures.

"It was a hard-fought battle from the start until the end and we played hard until the end," Duncan said.

"You have to be aggressive with him," Memphis coach Sidney Lowe said of Duncan. "Our game plan coming in was to try and get in front of him sometimes and deny him the ball."

San Antonio held an eight-point lead with 6:20 left in regulation but allowed Memphis to score the final eight points of the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies tied the game on a basket by rookie Shane Battier with just under 25 seconds left.

The Spurs held for the final shot and David Robinson missed a 14-footer with one second left.

Battier and Gasol scored 26 points apiece for the Grizzlies, who are 6-22 on the road this season.

"They played well," Gasol said. "They did what they were supposed to do. Next time, we'll beat them."

"All year long, they've been fantastic," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Battier is so active and fundamentally sound and Gasol is a handful."

The Spurs were 0-for-7 from the field over the last 6:20 of regulation and committed seven turnovers over that stretch.

Memphis scored the first basket in overtime as Battier converted a missed shot by teammate Lorenzen Wright. Antonio Daniels tied the game with a jumper with 3:51 to go but Brevin Knight countered for Memphis 18 seconds later.

After Charles Smith tied the game, 91-91, with 3:12 left, Duncan hit two free throws 33 seconds later. Battier then drained a jumper to forge the game's final tie.

"We just played hard," Battier said. "We just wanted to come out and be aggressive. (Brevin) Knight did a great job of finding me tonight. You got to make shots against these guys."

Trailing 54-41 at halftime, Memphis scored 30 of the 47 points scored in the third quarter, tying the game 71-71. Battier scored 10 of his points during the quarter.

Smith scored nine points for San Antonio, seven of which came in the third quarter.

"We had a lot of opportunities," Robinson said. "When things kind of break down and you lose your rhythm a little bit, it's nice to know that you can grind it out."
