Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller returned and gave the Indiana Pacers a new and improved look.

Miller scored 28 points after serving a suspension and the Pacers got back on track with a 106-88 victory over the road-weary Los Angeles Clippers.

Miller received a one-game suspension for fighting with Derrick Coleman in last Sunday's win over Philadelphia. The Pacers had four days off and Miller missed Friday's home loss to Cleveland.

In that game, Brad Miller, Ron Artest and Kevin Ollie -- three of the four players acquired in Tuesday's deal that sent Jalen Rose and Travis Best to Chicago -- made their debuts. The trio combined for 50 points, but Indiana lost for the fifth time in six games.

"Every time you add new players, the personality of your team changes," Reggie Miller said. "We are more defensively-oriented now. We were more gifted at the offensive end before the trade. I expect to shoulder more of the scoring burden. ... Tonight was an indication of that."

Playing for the first time in nearly a week, Miller made 8-of-13 shots and 10-of-12 free throws, leading five Pacers in double figures. He started a three-minute burst of 17 straight points by the Pacers in the second quarter.

"Reggie Miller changed the outlook of the game," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "He is always a threat. Reggie is one of the few in the league that I think gets better with age. He's an extremely bright player and a true talent."

Jermaine O'Neal scored 22 points for Indiana, which avenged a 31-point loss at Los Angeles on December 2.

Elton Brand had 23 points and 21 rebounds for the Clippers, who endured two huge droughts and fell to 1-2 on their five-game road trip. At the conclusion of the trip, they will have played 21 of their last 29 games on the road.

"We know Reggie Miller would be back to give them a lift," Brand said. "But it just comes down to the fact that we did not play well at all."

Brad Miller and Artest again had solid games. Miller had 14 points and seven rebounds and Artest -- coming off the bench after starting for Reggie Miller on Friday -- scored 13 points.

"I wanted to make the new guys feel welcome," Reggie Miller said. "They are very much welcome here. They are a great addition to our team."

"I know what my job is," the defensive-minded Artest said. "I know what I need to do and hopefully I can continue to do this."

The Clippers trailed, 23-21, after one quarter and still were within 39-35 after Brand's three-point play with 4:10 to play in the second period before the Pacers broke it open.

Reggie Miller converted a three-point play and Artest buried a 3-pointer before Miller's 3-pointer made it 48-35 with 3:20 to go. Brad Miller made a short jumper, O'Neal had two inside buckets and Artest made two foul shots for a 56-35 advantage with 1:12 remaining.

"Reggie opens things up for everyone," Artest said. "He is our team. It's just great to have the whole team out there running at full force."

A free throw by Darius Miles ended the 3:06 dry spell and the Clippers went to halftime trailing, 60-42.

Reggie Miller scored 10 points in the third period and the Pacers took an 87-72 lead into the fourth quarter.

"Reggie Miller did a good job frustrating our younger players," Clippers guard Jeff McInnis said. "I tried to tell them that they can't get caught up in it. Heck, he's been doing that since I was 7 or 8 years old, so it's something that's not new."

With Miller on the bench, the Clippers opened the final period with an 11-2 run, closing to 89-83 on a follow shot by recent rookie signee Tremaine Fowlkes with 7:47 to go.

But LA went nearly five minutes without a basket, missing four 3-pointers on a single possession. Miller scored four points and Jeff Foster had the last six in a 14-0 run that rebuilt the lead to 103-83 with 3:13 left.

Foster also grabbed 14 rebounds for the Pacers, who held a 50-44 advantage on the boards. Indiana shot 47.5 percent (38-of-80).

McInnis scored 23 points and Michael Olowokandi added 15 for Los Angeles, which shot 38 percent (32-of-85) and played without injured forwards Lamar Odom and Corey Maggette.
