Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Elton Brand's usual dominance on the offensive glass helped the Los Angeles Clippers complete a rare successful road trip.

Brand scored five points off two offensive rebounds during a key run in the fourth quarter as the Clippers completed a 3-2 road swing with a 94-84 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Brand, who became the first player in franchise history to grab 20 rebounds in consecutive games over the weekend, took over the offensive glass in the absence of teammate Michael Olowokandi, who sat out with a sprained left knee.

The All-Star forward collected 26 points and 15 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end.

"Elton is playing as well as anyone in the league as far as rebounding," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said.

"(The Clippers) have got a foundation guy with Brand, he's granite," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Elton Brand shows why he's an All-Star. That negativity that used to surround the Clippers, they're not buying it."

The teams traded the lead six times in the fourth quarter before Darius Miles sank two free throws with 5:22 left to give Los Angeles an 83-82 lead and spark an 11-0 run.

Jeff McInnis sank consecutive jumpers and Brand completed a three-point play after a follow shot with 2:30 to play. Brand capped the burst on a follow dunk with 62 seconds left.

"Our pressure defense and we executed our offense was the reason we had that little 11-0 run," Brand said. "We were running our sets and Jeff McInnis stepped up and hit some big shots."

Los Angeles held Houston scoreless for 4:45 down the stretch and rolled to its first winning to its first winning road trip of the season, improving to 9-20 overall away from home.

McInnis finished with 15 points and Obinna Ekezie scored 11 for the Clippers, who collected 41 rebounds while holding the Rockets to a season-low 29.

With Olowokandi sidelined and Corey Maggette on the injured list, Ekezie started at center and Tremaine Fowlkes got his first career start at small forward.

Fowlkes, who was signed to a 10-day contract on Sunday, scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting.

"Obviously we're plugging in guys that most people have never head of," Gentry said. "What makes me happiest is these guys keep coming through."

Cuttino Mobley scored 27 points and All-Star Steve Francis added 25 but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. The Rockets matched a season low with 13 points in the final period.

Francis also dished out seven assists but committed three offensive fouls and fouled out with 3:21 left.

Houston made only 5-of-18 3-pointers and 13-of-21 free throws en route to just its second loss in six games.

The teams were tied, 50-50, at halftime. In the third quarter, they were tied three times and exchanged the lead eight times before the Clippers took a 71-70 advantage into the final period.
