Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Clifford Robinson scored 24 points and Jerry Stackhouse added 23 as the Detroit Pistons defeated the Orlando Magic, 110-102, for their seventh victory in eight games.

Robinson made 10-of-17 shots and Stackhouse, who missed the team's win over Chicago on Wednesday because of a strained right shoulder, was 10-of-18 for the Pistons, who shot 51 percent overall (42-of-82) and moved into a first-place tie with Milwaukee atop the Central Division at 33-23.

The Pistons are 7-0 this season when Robinson and Stackhouse both score at least 20 points.

After Patrick Ewing hit a pair of free throws to cut Orlando's deficit to 80-77 with 10:28 remaining, Chucky Atkins and Jon Barry hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start a 13-2 run.

"We just didnít play smart defensively," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "It wasn't like a guy was just getting beat, it was the helping and a lot of little things. You have to be a focused team down the stretch. I thought we play extremely hard tonight but we lost focus in times when you couldnít and I thought that hurt us."

Corliss Williamson ended the burst with his first 3-pointer of the season to make it 93-79 with 7:08 left. Orlando got no closer than eight points thereafter, allowing Detroit to earn a split of their four-game season series.

"Thatís a tough team to play," Robinson said. "They do a really good job of spreading the floor and putting shooters out there. I thought we did a really good job in the second half to not overreacting to help and leaving their shooters open for shots."

"We moved the ball and did things we were supposed to do," Stackhouse said. "In the second half we really picked up our defense and made it tough on them to make shots."

Williamson had 17 points and fellow reserve Barry added 10 and five assists.

"I thought the guy who hurt us the most was Jon Barry," Rivers said. "I thought he controlled the game with his playmaking ability."

Detroit held a 20-13 lead after Stackhouse made a basket with 4:54 left in the first quarter, but Orlando went on a 24-6 run to take its biggest edge, 37-26, on a dunk by Don Reid with 8:57 left in the half.

The Pistons got within 51-48 by halftime and took the lead for good at 65-64 on a jumper by Stackhouse with 5:07 left in the third quarter.

"Orlandoís shot-making in the first quarter was breathtaking," said Detroit coach Rick Carlisle, who was named Coach of the Month for guiding the team to a 9-3 mark in February. "(Tracy) McGrady was unbelievable, which heís certainly capable of. Our guys hung in, kept working and kept grinding it out. We were finally able to catch up get a little bit of a cushion in the second half."

McGrady paced Orlando with 29 points but made just 11-of-29 shots. Troy Hudson added 17 points for the Magic (31-27), who are tied with Boston for the fourth playoff position in the Eastern Conference.

"We did a lot of standing around on the offensive end," McGrady said. "When I came off pick-and-rolls, guys were standing around watching. I started struggling offensively and we really didnít have anything going on the offensive end."

Detroit improved to 17-0 when it scores at least 100 points and won its fourth straight home game.

"We're in a good place right now, 10 games over (.500)," Stackhouse said. "We're just going to try to build on that and not look back."
