Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- After committing another flagrant foul, Kenyon Martin flagrantly attacked the rim.

Martin scored eight of his 15 points in the third quarter -- all on dunks -- as the New Jersey Nets held off the Chicago Bulls, 92-84, to snap a two-game losing streak.

Martin had a pair of flagrant-2 fouls earlier this season, raising questions about his style of play. He had a flagrant-1 against Toronto on February 2 and picked up another early in the third quarter when he tried to run through a screen set by Bulls rookie Eddy Curry.

"I thought he just reacted," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "He got hit a couple of times before that. I thought it was a hard foul. I didn't think it was a flagrant foul."

"I got elbowed twice," Martin said. "They don't seem to see anything. Whatever happens, happens."

With six flagrant foul points, Martin is subject to an automatic one-game suspension. He figures to sit out Tuesday's road game against the two-time champion Los Angeles Lakers.

"If it happens, it happens," Martin said. "There's nothing I can do about it, so we'll see."

"That's tough," Nets swingman Richard Jefferson said. "Kenyon's a very valuable part of our team. It's hard to say what's gonna happen. We just have to go out and play."

After his foul, Martin had four dunks in the period, including a flying lefthanded follow of a miss by rookie Jason Collins. His flurry helped the Nets extend an eight-point halftime lead to 66-53 entering the final period.

"Martin was huge," Nets guard Jason Kidd said. "He was big offensively and defensively, so we're gonna miss him on Tuesday. But we've got guys who can hold the ship until he gets back."

Collins had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Lucious Harris scored 16 points for the Nets, who completed a season series sweep of the Bulls without big contributions from their stars.

Kidd had just points and seven turnovers, although he did hand out nine assists. Kerry Kittles scored 14 points, but sat most of the fourth quarter in favor of Harris.

Jalen Rose scored 27 points and Marcus Fizer added 15 for the Bulls, who have lost four in a row to the Nets for the first time since dropping five straight from January 14, 1982-October 29.

"We have a segment at practice on how we are going to start our games and how we are going to finish our games," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "We play seven-minute quarters rehearsing that situation. I didn't think that we executed that very well at all."

Martin also picked up his 10th technical foul midway through the fourth quarter. Harris followed with a 3-pointer that gave the Nets an 80-68 lead.

The Bulls rallied within 83-78 on a steal and flying dunk by Eddie Robinson with 3:22 to go. Harris made two free throws and, after Robinson hit a jumper, Kidd made a 3-pointer for just his second basket of the game, giving New Jersey an 88-80 advantage with 1:32 to go.

"We haven't played our best for a week now," Kidd said. "This was a game for us to get everything right, but the main thing is we won the ballgame."

Keith Van Horn scored 14 points for the Nets, who shot 48 percent (36-of-75) from the field and held a 41-36 rebounding advantage.

Robinson scored 12 points and Jamal Crawford added 10 for the Bulls, who shot 46 percent (37-of-80) but attempted just 13 free throws, making seven.

Appearing for the first time since tearing his left ACL last July, Crawford played 15 minutes off the bench, making 4-of-7 shots with two assists and two steals.

Collins scored 12 of his team's first 15 points and the Nets took the lead for good in the first quarter, opening a 25-17 lead.

The Bulls pulled within 33-31 midway through the second quarter, but Kittles scored the last five points of a 12-3 burst that rebuilt the lead to 45-34 with 2:05 left.
