Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz love when the Denver Nuggets visit the Delta Center.

Karl Malone scored 21 points as the Jazz continued their home dominance of the Nuggets by cruising to a 100-82 victory.

It was the Jazz's 12th straight win over Denver here since December 7, 1996. Utah also posted a 106-97 home victory over the Nuggets on January 14.

"It's tough to win here," Nuggets forward Antonio McDyess said. "But still, we have to come in and give them some kind of battle. The last four or five years I've been here, basically, we haven't. We had a chance one time as I remember but still didn't pull it out."

Reserve Donyell Marshall added 17 points and John Stockton had 14 and six assists for Jazz, who opened a 45-36 halftime lead and never were threatened the rest of the way.

"It wasn't a very pretty basketball game by any stretch of the imagination," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They had 25 turnovers and we had 18 turnovers. I'm disappointed in the way we played 'cause I thought in some ways we'd be a lot more understanding of what we're trying to do."

Voshon Lenard netted 20 points for Denver, which lost for the eighth time in its last nine games.

The Nuggets were their own worst enemy in this latest debacle as they committed 28 turnovers that led to 33 points for Utah.

"I thought we played hard," Nuggets coach Mike Evans said. "We turned the ball over too many times. We turned it over 28 times and then we shoot less than 40 percent. We were lucky we lost by 18; it should have been one of those 25-, 30-, 40-point losses."

In control virtually the entire way, the Jazz opened a 62-48 advantage with 3:21 left in the third quarter on a pair of foul shots from the improving Rusty LaRue.

But the Nuggets tried to make things interesting, pulling within 63-55 with 75 seconds left in the period on a pair of free throws by forward James Posey.

Malone took over from there, scoring the Jazz's final five points in the quarter and 11 overall in a 15-6 spurt, giving Utah a commanding 78-61 advantage with 8:28 to play.

Malone finished 6-of-10 from the field and made 9-of-10 shots from the line, winning his battle with McDyess.

In his third game since returning from a knee injury, McDyess was effective as he finished with 10 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes. But he aggravated his surgically repaired left knee in the second quarter and left for good in the third.

"I felt terrible during the second half," McDyess said. "After that jump in the second quarter trying to block Stockton's shot, I kind of tweaked it (knee) and it went downhill."

Andrei Kirilenko added 13 points for the Jazz, who led by as many as 21 points in the waning moments.

Utah shot 51 percent (32-of-63), compared to just 38 percent (28-of-74) for the Nuggets, who held a 42-28 rebounding advantage. Juwan Howard had 12 boards for Denver.
