Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The last time the Miami Heat were in Detroit, they were among the worst teams in the league. They revisited the Palace of Auburn Hills as a team climbing toward the playoffs.

Eddie Jones sank a baseline jumper as time expired as the Heat continued their remarkable resurgence with a 93-91 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Miami's 86-80 loss here on December 30 dropped it to 5-23, tying the Chicago Bulls for the worst record in the Eastern Conference. But the Heat began a three-game winning streak the following day and had won 20 of 29 games before returning to Detroit.

"We believe we're a better team that our record showed early on," Jones said. "It's wanting to prove people wrong that were counting us out. I think that had a lot do with it. Every game is huge because we're trying to get ourselves in a position to contend."

"It's night and day," Miami center Alonzo Mourning said. "The beginning of the season we probably would've lost this game. Going through those painful losses, we found a way to win these type of games."

The Pistons took a 91-89 lead on a pair of free throws by Corliss Williamson with 43 seconds left. But Miami forged a tie with eight seconds remaining when Jimmy Jackson found Rod Strickland for a wide-open 18-foot jumper.

Jackson made a clutch defensive play on the next possession, forcing Detroit's Jerry Stackhouse to turn the ball over out of bounds with 2.8 seconds left.

"We had set up a play where I draw the defense we try to get Jon (Barry) in the corner for a three," Stackhouse said. "But Jackson knocked the ball away from me and when I got it back I tried to do things too fast."

Jones received the ensuing inbounds and was double-teamed as he dribbled to the left corner. He used a pump-fake to elude Stackhouse and nailed a 20-footer over Michael Curry to give Miami its fourth win in five games.

"We knew it was going to be Eddie or Zo," Curry said. "They got him the ball they got to the baseline. I tried to jump at him and at least throw his vision off, but give him he credit, he just hit a great shot."

"He's been making clutch shots for us all year," Strickland said. "By far he's made the most clutch shots. That's the man we're going to go to at the end."

Miami made just three of its first 15 shots in the fourth quarter before Strickland and Jones nailed their clutch jumpers.

"We made the plays down the stretch," Jones said. "I won't say I love being in that position, but if the challenge is there, I want to be there. I'd rather go out and win a game straight out."

Jones finished with 24 points and Mourning had 18 points and tied a season high with 14 rebounds as the Heat moved within 2 1/2 games of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"We're in a fight," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "I like where we are. We're a long way away from our objective. All we've done is afforded ourselves a chance and that's all we want."

Brian Grant collected 15 points and a season-high 16 rebounds as Miami held a 47-39 rebounding edge and scored 23 points off 13 offensive boards.

Stackhouse scored 22 points and Chucky Atkins added 17 but was held scoreless in the second half for Detroit, which remained one-half game ahead of the second-place Milwaukee Bucks in the Central Division.

"This is what Eastern Conference basketball is all about," Detroit Rick Carlisle coach said. "A game played in the low 90s coming down to a last shot. It's a great experience for our team. Miami is really playing great and I can't imagine how they wouldn't make the playoffs."

Jones scored five points during a 11-2 run that gave Miami a 47-38 advantage with 3:48 left in the second quarter. But Detroit closed the first half with a 17-2 burst led by Stackhouse, who scored six points during the stretch.

Barry nailed a 3-pointer to beat the second-quarter buzzer and give the Pistons a 55-49 halftime lead. But six players scored as the Heat opened the second half with 13 consecutive points to take a 62-55 lead with 7:26 remaining.

"There were a couple of stretches where we weren't playing quite as hard as them," Carlisle said. "And they really made us pay. Early in the game and the beginning of the third quarter. Those two stretches were decisive in us not really having a chance to control the game."

Miami had its largest lead, 80-66 with 47 seconds left in the third, but Detroit went on a 19-5 run over the next six minutes. Detroit's Damon Jones nailed a 3-pointer with 6:50 remaining to make it 85-85, the first of four ties in the game's final seven minutes.
