Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan tallied 23 points and David Robinson scored his 20,000th point as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Golden State Warriors for the 16th straight time, 109-88.

Duncan made 11-of-21 shots and had seven rebounds for the Spurs, who have not lost to the Warriors since March 4, 1998. The All-Star forward sat out the entire fourth quarter and missed an opportunity to add to his league-leading total of 48 double-doubles this season.

Robinson became the 27th player in NBA history to reach the 20,000-point plateau with the first of two free throws with 4:07 remaining in the third quarter to give the Spurs a 72-55 lead.

"I felt good for the fans and for some of the things that we as a team have been able to accomplish over the years," Robinson said. "A few things flashed through my mind and it feels nice to be able to do it in one place and build something like we have."

Robinson was given a standing ovation after he made his free throw.

"When I was a rookie, I was just a scared rookie looking to make something happen. To think 13 years from now, here I am, looking at 20,000 points and (being named one of the league's all-time top 50 players) and a championship, you know it's unbelievable. I mean I still don't think I have a grasp on what has been accomplished around here, along with the type of career I've had. One day I'll know that I'll really be able to appreciate this."

"David is special to this city, not just because of his points," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "But he was as thrilled as I am and our team is. It's just another element to what a wonderful human being he is to this city."

The Warriors jumped out to a 9-2 lead but the Spurs quickly came back and took the lead for good at 22-20 on a dunk by Duncan with 1:44 remaining in the quarter.

San Antonio took a 57-42 lead into halftime and led 83-63 heading into the fourth quarter. The Spurs rested their entire starting five for the final six minutes of the game.

"It felt great to be able to get past these guys again," Duncan said. "They can score points and grab that offensive board and run the floor. I thought we did a great job tonight of containing them on the offensive boards, especially in the first half, cutting down the open-court baskets."

Steve Smith added 16 points and Robinson and Malik Rose chipped in 13 apiece for the Spurs, who shot 52 percent (44-of-85) and held the Warriors to 40 percent (36-of-89).

Antawn Jamison had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Larry Hughes added 20 points for Golden State, which lost for the 12th straight time on the road and for the 10th time in 11 games overall.

The Warriors played for the second straight game without Jason Richardson, who has a left ankle sprain. Richardson has averaged nearly 20 points per game since the All-Star break.

"We kept great focus throughout the game, which was great to see, and we focused on detail," Popovich said. "We've got no injuries, everybody getting in shape, and hopefully it will continue."
