Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone made his last five shots and scored 10 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Utah Jazz dominated the final period en route to a 92-84 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

John Stockton scored 11 of his 19 points in the first half to get the Jazz off to a good start, but it was his long-time teammate and fellow future Hall of Famer who carried the team down the stretch. After missing his first eight shots, Malone did not miss in the final nine minutes.

Utah had its largest lead, 77-64, on a dunk by Malone with 9:01 remaining. But Los Angeles rallied behind Derek Fisher, who scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter and made two free throws to bring the Lakers within 84-80 with 2:47 left.

Malone, who buried a long jumper before Fisher's free throws, nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing to give the Jazz an 87-80 cushion with 2:24 to go.

Malone sank 1-of-2 free throws for an 89-81 lead before Shaquille O'Neal made a short hook shot to bring Los Angeles within six at 57 seconds.

Robert Horry made 1-of-2 free throws with 38 seconds left, but Scott Padgett sealed the victory for Utah with a 3-pointer 22 seconds later.

Rookie Andrei Kirilenko had 11 points and four blocks and helped limit Bryant to just three points in the second half as Utah improved to 3-1 on a five-game homestand.

O'Neal collected 28 points and 13 rebounds and Bryant finished with 26 points for Los Angeles, which had a three-game winning streak snapped and failed to secure the best record in the Western Conference.

Bryant returned from a two-game suspension stemming from Friday's fight with Indiana Pacers guard Reggie Miller. He made 7-of-19 shots and 11-of-12 free throws but was 0-of-9 from the floor in the second half.

O'Neal made just 2-of-9 free throws for the Lakers, who were 16-of-25 from the line.

Los Angeles had a 44-32 rebounding advantage but committed 24 turnovers leading to 32 points for Utah. Bryant accounted for five turnovers while four other Lakers, including O'Neal, had three apiece.

Rookie Jarron Collins and Donyell Marshall scored 10 points apiece for the Jazz, who outscored the Lakers, 32-16, from the line.

Horry's layup with 5:01 left in the third quarter forged the game's eighth tie before Stockton made 1-of-2 free throws to give Utah the lead for good at 61-60.

Kirilenko sank two free throws and, after O'Neal missed a pair and Malone hit a tenchical foul shot, made a hook shot for a 66-60 lead. He capped the period with a driving layup as the Jazz took a 70-62 lead into the fourth.
