Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Elton Brand led seven players in double figures with 17 points as the Los Angeles Clippers dominated the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second half en route a 95-78 victory.

With the win, the Clippers (32-31) surpassed their win total from last season. Los Angeles hasn't finished over .500 since 1992-93 when it won 45 games.

"Our goal at the beginning was to make the playoffs," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We have to play, we're in the West. Obviously you have to win 45 games to be even considered. That's probably going to come down to the last week of the season."

"Right now we have our backs against the wall," Clippers guard Jeff McInnis said. "We had a bad stretch, but now we're starting to turn it around. We're getting confidence, every time somebody goes down, somebody steps up."

Cleveland's last lead was 34-32 with 4:12 remaining after a jump shot by Jumaine Jones. But the Clippers outscored the Cavs, 14-4, to close out the period and took control.

The Clippers led 46-38 at halftime and put away the Cavaliers with a 13-2 run over the first six minutes of the third period that pushed the lead to 59-40.

McInnis started the burst with a 19-foot jumper and the Clippers sank six of their 16 foul shots in that span.

"On the offensive end, we had to make them pay by throwing the ball inside," Gentry said. "If they were going to double us then we had to have good spacing."

Eric Piatkowski capped the surge with a 3-pointer with 5:42 left. During Los Angeles' run, the Cavs missed 11 consecutive shots.

"I didn't like anything about our game," Cavs coach John Lucas said. "I thought the guys found it tough to play against the athletes. They just stunk."

Reserve Trajan Langdon paced Cleveland with a season-high 17 points while point guard Andre Miller was held to just six.

The Cavs played without injured big men Tyrone Hill and Chris Mihm.

"We never got to the foul line. We only got six free throws and they outrebounded us, 59-34. I know we miss Hill and Mihm, but we can't miss them that much. I don't know who that was out there on the court."

Piatkowski also scored 17 points while Darius Miles added 12 off the bench. Tremaine Fowlkes and Michael Olowokandi contributed 11 apiece for Los Angeles, which shot 43 percent (36-of-84) from the field.

McInnis had 10 points and just missed a triple-double with nine assists and eight rebounds.

The Cavaliers trailed 71-52 after three quarters and never rallied. They trailed 90-64 midway through the final period.
