Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Shawn Marion stopped Tracy McGrady at the end of regulation, but there was no stopping McGrady in overtime.

McGrady scored all 10 of his team's points in the extra session, leading the Orlando Magic to their third straight win, a 119-114 victory over the slumping Phoenix Suns.

Marion, who had 22 points and 13 rebounds, made a fadeaway baseline jumper over McGrady with 4.3 seconds left in the fourth quarter, pulling Phoenix into a 109-109 tie.

"Marion's an athletically talented young brother who's up and coming," McGrady said. "You have to respect his game. He's kind of hard to guard because he makes a hard move and can jump so quick."

On the next possession, McGrady drove left and was challenged by Marion, who made McGrady change hands and knocked him to the floor as time expired.

"At the end of regulation, I thought I had it but the ball kind of slipped out of my hands," McGrady said. "For me to drive was the shot we wanted, but it just didn't fall."

McGrady, who had 35 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, started overtime with a running bank shot and a 20-footer, giving the Magic the lead for good. Marion answered with a free throw and tip-in, cutting the deficit to 113-112 with 1:50 remaining.

McGrady answered with an inside hoop and a free throw for a 116-112 lead with 1:02 to play. On the next possession, McGrady stole the ball from Marion and sealed the win with a long jumper with 30 seconds left.

"When they forced it into overtime, that's when I took it upon myself to take over the game," said McGrady, who made 14-of-28 shots. "I said, `Let's stop playing around. Let's get this win and get out of here.'" "It's part of the learning process for him," Suns coach Frank Johnson said of Marion. "He really wanted to guard McGrady. That last play in regulation was great defense by Shawn."

McGrady's heroics overshadowed teammate Troy Hudson, who celebrated his 26th birthday with a career-high 34 points. Hudson eclipsed his previous high of 30 against New Jersey on January 2, 2001.

"I had a lot of energy with today being my birthday and family being in town," Hudson said. "My teammates and the coaching staff have shown a lot of confidence in me. When they have confidence in you, it tends to make you a little bit more relaxed."

"I don't think anyone knew he could shoot the ball like he's shooting it this year," teammate Pat Garrity said. "He's shooting with such confidence. He was basically in his own little world tonight, just playing relaxed and having fun."

Horace Grant scored 17 points and Monty Williams added 16 for the Magic (34-30), who moved into a tie with Philadelphia for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Orlando hosts Denver on Friday and visits Philadelphia on Sunday.

"We're just happy to get out of here with a win," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "I told them -- again -- every game's going to be like this. It's going to be tough. You're going to have to drag it out."

Stephon Marbury had 31 points and 10 assists for the Suns, who have lost three straight games. Phoenix had won its last three visits to Orlando.

McGrady scored 12 points in the first quarter, helping Orlando to a 28-22 lead. Hudson scored 15 points in the second period, including consecutive 3-pointers that closed the first half and gave the Magic a 62-53 advantage.

"Troy had it going on in regulation and we just kept feeding him the ball," McGrady said.

The Suns closed to 86-82 entering the fourth quarter. Marion, who scored just eight points in the first three periods, scored 11 in the fourth, including the tying basket.

Grant and Garrity grabbed nine rebounds each for the Magic, who shot 51 percent (49-of-96). Former Magic Penny Hardaway scored 16 points and Joe Johnson added 15 for the Suns, who shot 49 percent (49-of-100).
