Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal had trouble all night long. The Los Angeles Lakers were in trouble until Kobe Bryant took over in the fourth quarter.

Bryant covered for a sub-par game by O'Neal by scoring 14 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers rallied for a 98-92 victory over the Clippers, their intracity rivals.

O'Neal was listed in the starting lineup but was not on the floor for the opening tip. About four minutes into the contest, the 7-2 superstar strolled out of the locker room and onto the floor.

Although the official word was an upset stomach, Lakers coach Phil Jackson joked about it afterward.

"It was a coaching strategy," Jackson said. "I don't think there has been many times in his career that he hasn't started a game and I thought it would be a unique situation."

Once O'Neal got there, he was harassed by Clippers 7-footer Michael Olowokandi and managed just 16 points, 10 below his average and nowhere near the 40-point explosion he had Thursday against Golden State.

With O'Neal struggling, the Lakers trailed 78-68 with 8:22 remaining before Bryant led a 22-4 run with 10 points. He had four big baskets in the surge, including a 3-pointer that gave the Lakers a 90-82 lead with 2:28 remaining.

"Their best player beat us," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We can't let that happen; we got to have someone else step up out there. We've got to get to Kobe in those situations. He lives for those situations."

During the run, O'Neal and Olowokandi were called for double technical fouls. In the final minute, they exchanged shoves and words and had to be separated before both left the court.

"I do not think Shaquille is going to try to get into a fight or put himself in a situation where he gets himself suspended for a game or two games at this point in the season," Bryant said.

"He said I was being too aggressive trying to box him out, but how aggressive can you get against a guy that weighs 360-270 pounds?" Olowokandi said. "He said I was 'bowing him, or whatever, but he does the same thing to everybody; he does the same thing to me. He hits me in the back all the time and I don't complain. I don't say anything. Then he gets hit, he wants to cry and he wants to whine. He needs to grow up."

O'Neal, who had 13 rebounds but made just 5-of-13 shots, left without speaking to reporters.

Rick Fox scored 12 points and Robert Horry added 10 for the Lakers, who avenged a 95-90 loss to the Clippers on January 23 and beat them for the 19th time in the last 21 meetings.

Quentin Richardson scored 22 points off the bench and Elton Brand added 18 and 12 rebounds for the Clippers, who fell 1 1/2 games behind Utah in the race for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference.

The Clippers closed the third quarter with a 12-0 run, taking a 71-66 lead into the final period. A jumper by Sean Rooks and a 3-pointer by Richardson opened the fourth quarter and made it 76-66.

Bryant's fadeaway jump shot pulled the Lakers within 78-77 with 6:19 to go. Horry hit two free throws and, after a basket by Brand, fed Bryant for a jumper that gave the Lakers the lead for good.

The Lakers' next three baskets were 3-pointers -- two by Bryant and one by Derek Fisher. On all three, Horry had an open shot but swung the ball to a teammate for an even better look.

"These were important shots and ones that Rob will usually take, but he made the extra pass, which was important," Jackson said.

Bryant's second 3-pointer capped the run at 90-82 with 2:28 to go, and the Clippers got no closer than five points thereafter.

The Lakers (46-18) shot 45 percent (35-of-78) and committed just eight turnovers. They moved into a tie with Sacramento for the best record in the NBA.

Darius Miles had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Jeff McInnis scored 14 points for the Clippers, who shot just 37.5 percent (33-of-88), negating a 52-39 rebounding edge. Olowokandi swpet 14 boards but made just 1-of-10 shots.
