Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- With Rashard Lewis and Vladimir Radmanovic sidelined, the Seattle SuperSonics needed someone to step up. Rookie Predrag Drobnjak filled the void.

Drobnjak scored six of his career-high 18 points during key run bridging the final two quarter and the SuperSonics held on for a 95-87 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Lewis, Seattle's second-leading scorer, sat out after straining his left shoulder in Friday's loss to Washington. Radmanovic, a rookie forward, missed his fifth straight game with a sprained big toe on his right foot. But the Sonics' other European import picked up the slack.

Seattle never trailed in the second half but was clinging to a 63-61 lead with 2:25 left in the third quarter before scoring 13 of the next 15 points.

Desmond Mason opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to give the Sonics a 70-63 advantage and Drobnjak scored the next six points. He made a layup and consecutive jumpers to give Seattle a 76-63 cushion with 9:38 to go.

"I made some shots at a critical point," said the 6-11 Drobnjak, who was 8-of-12 from the field. "People are surprised that a big man can shoot. I'm from Yugoslavia and most big men can shoot. Someone is taught to shoot the outside shot and my teammates believe in me. They trust my shot."

Seattle had its largest lead, 84-70, after Randy Livingston sank two free throws with 4:56 left. It had an 87-76 lead just under three minutes later, but Los Angeles went on an 11-4 run and closed within three points after Jeff McInnis nailed a 3-pointer with 38 seconds remaining.

But Gary Payton sank a pair of free throws with 28 seconds to go and the Clippers failed to scored on their final two possessions.

Seattle made 13-of-14 free throws in the fourth quarter, including 9-of-10 in the final 1:59.

Payton had 23 points and eight assists and Brent Barry added 19 and six for the Sonics, who shot 48 percent (34-of-76) and outscored the Clippers, 24-9, at the line.

Mason scored 15 points off the bench as Seattle's reserves outscored their counterparts, 41-14.

"We talked about it before the game, every doing their part," McMillan said. "I think some of the role players, when they get additional minutes, start to feel comfortable out there on the floor."

"Overall they outplayed us," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "It's very disappointing but we just have to write this one off, regroup and get ourselves in the race again."

McInnis finished with 30 points and Eric Piatkowski added 20 for Los Angeles, which shot only 38 percent (33-of-86) but made 12-of-20 3-pointers.

"We had no energy," McInnis said. "We can't win games like that. (Seattle) is a playoff team. We're supposed to be a playoff team too. We have to match their energy and we came out flat."

Michael Olowokandi had 11 points and 15 rebounds and Elton Brand had eight and 14 for the Clippers, who fell two games behind the Utah Jazz for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

"We can't get too high on wins and too low on losses," Gentry said. "We just have to do what's necessary to win. We just have to play hard and try and find way to win games."
