Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- The Sacramento Kings have narrowed things to one.

Chris Webber had 35 points, 12 rebounds and five assists as the Kings shaved their magic number for clinching a playoff spot down to one with a 110-87 victory over the Houston Rockets.

One also is Sacramento's lead over the Los Angeles Lakers in the Pacific Division. After host Denver on Thursday, the Kings will square off against the Lakers here on Sunday.

In addition, Sacramento moved one victory away from reaching the 50-win plateau for the second consecutive season.

Bobby Jackson added 20 points and Mike Bibby contributed 15 as the Kings won for the sixth time in their last seven games.

Beginning a four-game homestand, they improved their league-best home mark to 31-3.

"Hopefully, we will be able to keep playing this strong for the rest of the season," Jackson said. "We know how we can play when we are at home, our biggest concern is going on the road and playing well."

Webber was 15-of-20 from the field and sat out the final 9:50, watching the Kings continue their dominance of the Rockets.

Sacramento has won the last seven meetings overall and six in a row at home.

"I feel as a team collectively, and as individuals, we are getting better," Webber said. "We have been looking for that stride, and we are finally starting to feel it. We are starting to feel a little bit better about things. We just need to keep winning the games we have to play. The simple solution is winning those games you need to win, and we have been doing that lately."

Cuttino Mobley scored 17 points, Kelvin Cato contributed 16 and Steve Francis 13, eight rebounds and eight assists for Houston, which has lost three in a row overall. The Rockets have not won at Arco Arena since a 102-99 triumph on March 2, 2000.

"I really feel they have a good shot (of winning the championship)," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "It's not going to be easy to beat the Lakers. But (the Kings) have so many weapons. And then their passing, when you can get layups in the half court, and then they're just phenomenal shooters, too."

The Kings played all but the first 90 seconds without All-Star forward Peja Stojakovic, who aggravated a hamstring injury.

But they never trailed after Webber hit a jumper to give them a 12-10 lead with 5:33 left in the first quarter.

"From what I was told, he didn't do anything more to it," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "He ran the floor and tried to accelerate and he just felt discomfort. it wasn't a rip or anything. We'll have to wait and see. I doubt if he'll play Thursday. Hopefully, we'll have him for Sunday's game."

Leading by just three points, Sacramento used a 12-2 run to take a 42-29 advantage with 3:50 left in the second quarter.

After Walt Williams hit a 3-pointer to pull Houston within 50-43 with 10:06 to go in the third period, Hedo Turkoglu made a driving layup and Webber hit a basket to give the Kings an 11-point cushion. They lead by double-digits the rest of the way.

"We seemed not to be really into (the game) earlier, we missed a lot of shots. Once we got it going in the second quarter, and in the second half, we played pretty well," Adelman said. "I am really pleased to get the win. It was a nice victory."

Adelman was worried his team would be tired after returning from a 4-1 road trip, as was center Vlade Divac.

"It's always hard playing the first game at home after a road trip," Divac said. "By the second half though, we were making our shots. The season is coming to an end, and we have to finish strong. I think that our road trip showed that we are playing great basketball."

Turkoglu, celebrating his 23rd birthday, finished with 12 points and eight rebounds while playing in place of Stojakovic.

"Hedo is incredible," Webber said. "He played some point guard tonight. He's a talented player. Hedo has a lot of heart and I admire that. I'm just glad he was able to show what he can do on the court. Coming off the bench ... it's tough. But he makes us better as a team."

The Kings shot 48 percent (43-of-90) from the field and scored 20 points off 14 turnovers by the Rockets.

Kenny Thomas had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Houston, which shot 38 percent (34-of-89) but only 1-of-15 from 3-point range.

"You can't keep saying it was one of those nights," Francis said. "One of our good assets is we make 3-pointers, that's a big percentage of our offense. Not only from the 3-point line we weren't able to hit shots, but we weren't able to hit shots from inside the perimeter."
