Game StoryATLANTA (Ticker) -- Nazr Mohammed scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the rejuvenated Atlanta Hawks crushed the New York Knicks, 118-89, for their fifth victory in six games.
Mohammed led six Hawks in double figures as Atlanta dominated the Knicks in every facet of the game -- holding them to 39 percent (33-of-84) from the field, enjoying a 48-36 rebounding advantage and dishing out 34 assists to New York's 15.
"As a point guard, you love to see guys making shots," said Jason Terry, who had 15 points and 11 assists for Atlanta. "We knew coming in to force the tempo."
Atlanta extended a 62-52 third-quarter lead with a 29-10 run in which Mohammed scored 10 points, including a reverse layup that made it 91-62 with 1:58 left.
"We played well. We did a lot of good things, it was a great feeling," Mohammed said. "We're improving as a team. We've gotten more comfortable. It's a little frustrating. Give us an extra three or four weeks, maybe we could make some noise."
Kurt Thomas collected 19 points and 11 rebounds and Latrell Sprewell added 15 points for New York, which had won three of its previous four contests.
Atlanta held Knicks leading scorer Allan Houston to just 10 points -- 11 below his season average -- on 3-of-12 shooting in snapping a four-game losing streak against New York.
The Hawks took the lead for good early on, 15-13, on a bucket by Shareef Abdur-Rahim with 7:16 left in the first quarter. Leading 18-15, they closed out the quarter with a 14-8 run for a 32-23 edge after one and were ahead at halftime, 62-48.
Abdur-Rahim finished with 20 points, nine boards and five assists, but also committed seven of Atlanta's 10 turnovers. Dermarr Johnson scored 13 points.
Houston's free throw got New York as close as 64-54 with 9:19 remaining, but Terry drained a 3-pointer and Mohammed scored six of the next eight points as Atlanta built a 75-54 cushion.
Toni Kukoc netted 11 points and seven boards off the bench and Ira Newble finished with 10 points as the Hawks shot 54 percent (50-of-92) from the floor and went 7-of-14 from 3-point range.
"It was a good win, no question we're playing better the last six weeks," said Atlanta coach Lon Kruger. "The guys just keep making progress. We've got a lot of improving to do."
Othella Harrington went 8-of-8 from the foul line and had 10 points off the bench for New York.
"We didn't play defense, they got easy baskets. If you shoot 54 percent, that means you're getting easy baskets," Harrington said.
