Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers had not lost to the lowly Chicago Bulls since Michael Jordan retired following the 1997-98 season. Rasheed Wallace saw no need for change.

Wallace led seven players in double figures with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting as the Trail Blazers easily defeated the Bulls for the seventh straight time, 109-93.

Derek Anderson added 16 points and Dale Davis 14 for Portland (42-26), which won for the 16th time in 18 games to move into a tie with Minnesota for fifth place in the competitive Western Conference.

"We definitely let one get away from us in Jersey the other night (a 97-82 loss to the Nets)," Davis said. "We couldn't let that happen here. We had to make sure we stopped that and won here. We wanted to take advantage of them early, but we were a little lax on our pressure defensively. Once we took control and trapped and pressured them, the game turned for us."

Shawn Kemp, who finished with 11 points, hit a 12-foot jump shot at the end of the first quarter to give Portland the lead for good, 22-21. The Blazers, who led by eight points at halftime, held a double-digit advantage for the last 22-plus minutes of the contest after Wallace hit a 3-pointer to make it 60-48.

"It's great to come back here and especially to get a win," said Scottie Pippen, who won six titles with the Jordan-led Bulls and had only three points but had nine assists and five rebounds. "This was not my best game here, but I'll take it as we come away with a win. We found a way to pull one out. We're healthy and now have gotten all the bodies back on the court. Also guys are accepting their roles and not complaining. Now we're just one happy family."

Jamal Crawford, who recently came back from an ACL injury, had a career-high 18 points on 8-of-8 shooting for the Bulls, who lost for the 10th time in 11 games.

"It may be (my best game as a Bull), but it is bittersweet, because I had a good game but we didn't win," Crawford said. "We've only won one game since I've been back so that is kind of frustrating. But we have to keep trying."

Rookie Eddy Curry also tallied 18 and Jalen Rose added 15 for Chicago, which dropped its sixth consecutive game at the United Center.

"They have very good young players," Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Their skill level is there, but the knowledge of the game is not there yet. You can see the talent, though, as we had no offensive rebounds in the first half where they had eight. They showed tremendous energy out there."

Both teams shot 51 percent from the field, but the Blazers made 10-of-18 3-pointers while the Bulls sank just 3-of-6.

"We are going to have to have a better defensive level," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "We need to prepare our guys mentally to accept this challenge. Some of it is inexperience. I hate to use that word as an excuse. It's obvious we were just not ready for that yet. But when that happens we will be a good team."
