Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Dan Majerle has lost something on his 3-point shot, but he provided a glimpse from the past against his former team.

Majerle nailed a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch, including the go-ahead shot with 3:33 left, as the Phoenix Suns posted a 102-96 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

At his peak, Majerle was a 46 percent 3-point shooter. And he ranks sixth on the NBAs all-time for 3-pointers. But injuries and age have taken their toll and Majerle was shooting just 30 percent (50-of-167) from beyond the arc this season.

Suns coach Frank Johnson believes his presence alone helps the team.

"He came up big tonight, but when hasn't he, not necessarily with scoring but with the intangibles," Johnson asked. "When he gets the big shot, that is a bonus for us. But he has been doing all of the intangibles all year."

"I've been playing a lot in the fourth quarter and have been able to produce," Majerle said. "I hit some big ones in the LA (Clippers) game and tonight. It makes the game fun being out there and making your shots count and being able to hit them."

The Suns were led by Shawn Marion, who collected 29 points and 10 rebounds. But Majerle came up big down the stretch, helping Phoenix outscore Cleveland, 18-12.

After Majerle put the Suns ahead for good, Joe Johnson made it 89-84 on the next possession.

But Stephon Marbury was called for a technical foul and, after Wesley Person missed the ensuing free throw, Andre Miller converted a three-point play to get the Cavs within 89-87 with 2:37 left.

However, Jake Tsakalidis had the biggest of his nine rebounds, pulling down a miss by Majerle and getting it back to Majerle, whose basket made it 92-87 with 2:01 to go.

Miller made two free throws on the other end, but Marion knocked down consecutive jumpers and the Suns led 96-89 with 45 seconds left.

Those points proved valuable for Phoenix, who surrendered three dunks to Ricky Davis that kept the Cavs in it.

Tsakalidis scored a career-high 23 points and Marbury had a season-best 14 assists. Tsakalidis' previous best was 17, most recently against Golden State on February 1.

"Jake played really well tonight," Marbury said. "He had a big game for us. He was out there, pretty much dominating."

"We took advantage of them double-teaming him and I just rolled inside and hit open shots," added Tsakalidis, who made 9-of-13 shots. "We were able to penetrate every time."

Lamond Murray and top rebounder Tyrone Hill were sidelined for Cleveland and starting center Zydrunas Ilgauskas played just 10 minutes before his back spasms acted up at the end of the first quarter.

"We played a decent game," Miller said. "We just lost it at the end. We didn't rebound too well down the stretch and I think they got a lot of shots off second chances. We didn't finish off the game like we should have."

"I really liked our effort," Cavs coach John Lucas added. "I thought we played hard. We had a chance to win the ballgame. Wesley's missed free throw after the technical could have cut it to one point and Majerle's 3-pointers killed us."

Davis had 23 points off the bench to lead Cleveland. Miller added 21 and 17 assists to shatter John Bagley's 1985-86 single-season team record of 735.

The Suns' largest lead was 45-30 following consecutive dunks by Tsakalidis with 2:32 left. But they were outscored, 8-2, down the stretch and settled for a 47-38 halftime edge.

The Cavs scored the first 10 points of the second half for a 48-47 lead, their first since early in the game.

"We got the win," Johnson said. "That is the most important thing tonight. We got a little careless, but were able to make up for it again and make plays down the stretch. They just don't want to me sit there and relax."
