Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- It had been a long time since Nick Van Exel had taken clutch shots for a good team. He certainly remembered how.

Van Exel scored all 17 of his points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Dallas Mavericks rallied for a 112-106 victory over the slumping Milwaukee Bucks.

Acquired at the trade deadline, Van Exel has shown a flair for making clutch shots during his career. However, he had been doing it with Denver, which never made the playoffs during his tenure there.

"It's indescribable," Van Exel said. "It's like I'm back in the NBA again, playing games that mean something to my team."

The leading scorer with the Nuggets, Van Exel primarily has come off the bench with the Mavericks. He did not start this game but had a fantastic finish.

"He's trying to be so conservative and we keep telling him to be aggressive," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "We need him to attack and be aggressive and he couldn't do that. I think I got his attention when I went with Avery (Backup guard Avery Johnson). Nick was a last resort."

"At halftime I was very frustrated with myself," Van Exel said. "In the second half I stayed confident and waited for my opportunity. I know how Nellie likes to get guys motivated."

Van Exel scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, helping Dallas erase an 81-68 deficit. He added two layups in overtime that gave the Mavs the lead for good at 99-98 before the "Big Three" of Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley took charge, scoring the next 11 points.

"Nick, in the fourth, really got aggressive and caused some problems for them," Nash said.

It was a nice homecoming for Van Exel, who grew up in Milwaukee. It also was a homecoming of sorts for Finley, who played collegiately at Wisconsin and collected 36 points and 12 rebounds.

"I love it here (in Milwaukee)," Van Exel said. "My mom, my family and my friends were all here, so it was nice to get the win."

"We've had big comebacks before so we knew we could come back," Finley said. "This game was just too important to let it slip away."

Nash had 25 points and 13 assists and Nowitzki added 17 and 14 rebounds for the Mavs, who moved back into a tie with San Antonio atop the Midwest Division and became the last visitor to win at the Bradley Center. Dallas had lost 12 straight visits to Milwaukee since December 13, 1987, when the Bucks played at the Mecca.

Thomas scored 22 points despite a sore knee for the injury-riddled Bucks, who are 9-14 since the All-Star break and fell 3 1/2 games behind first-place Detroit in the Central Division. Milwaukee played without starting guards Ray Allen (sore knee) and Sam Cassell (sprained toe) and lost guard Michael Redd to a knee injury.

"We may have run out of gas a little bit at the end of the game," Bucks coach George Karl said. "We had a lot of guys exert a lot of energy out on the floor tonight."

The Bucks led by 17 points early in the second quarter and still held an 81-68 lead in the fourth period. But a jumper and 3-pointer by Van Exel capped a 15-3 run that cut the deficit to 84-83 with 6:10 left.

Milwaukee rebuilt the lead to 93-85 but Van Exel had two 3-pointers in a 10-2 surge to pull Dallas into a 95-95 tie with 1:27 to go. Van Exel and Finley missed jumpers on Dallas' final possession of regulation.

After a layup by Van Exel gave the Mavs a 99-98 lead with 3:20 left in overtime, Nash and Nowitzki made 3-pointers around two free throws by Anthony Mason, widening the lead to 105-100 with 1:34 remaining.

Finley answered a 3-pointer by Robinson with a fadeaway jumper for a 108-103 lead with 20 seconds to play and Nash sank two free throws to offset Greg Anthony's 3-pointer and seal it with 10 seconds remaining.

"I think both teams were extremely tired," Nelson said. "It came down to the team that had the most shooters on the floor at the end and that was us."

The Mavericks shot 46 percent (43-of-94), including 9-of-26 from the arc, and committed just nine turnovers.

Mason had 20 points and 12 rebounds, Glenn Robinson added 18 and 10 and Redd scored 18 points before going down in the third quarter for the Bucks, who shot 45 percent (38-of-84) and made 12-of-26 3-pointers.

"I tried to get back out on the floor but I was in too much pain," Redd said.

Two free throws by Darvin Ham gave Milwaukee a 41-24 lead with 8:38 left in the second quarter. Dallas closed to 56-45 at halftime behind Finley, who scored 21 points.

"Mike carried us in the first half," Nash said. "If it wasn't for his performance in the first half, it wouldn't have been a game."
