Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs had their league season-high 13-game winning streak snapped by the Portland Trail Blazers, who got 24 points from Bonzi Wells and 19 from Dale Davis in a 98-93 victory.

The Trail Blazers supplanted the Spurs as the hottest team in the Western Conference. They won for the 17th time in their last 20 games, including nine of 10 at home. Their only loss at the Rose Garden during that span came Monday, when they blew a 25-point third-quarter lead to the last-place Memphis Grizzlies.

But with the first-place team in the Midwest Division paying a visit, Portland was up to the challenge. The Blazers snapped a five-game skid against San Antonio and moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Minnesota for fifth place in the West.

"To beat a team like that the way are playing, that's a heck of a win," Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Every player who played for us tonight played a major role and it was a team victory."

"The Memphis game was just something that happened," Portland guard Damon Stoudamire said. "We didn't put much into it. We knew we would come back and respond this evening."

Stoudamire scored just nine points, shooting 2-of-10 from the field.

Tim Duncan scored 34 points -- just 10 in the second half -- for the Spurs, who dropped to two games behind Sacramento for the top spot in the West.

"Ruben (Patterson) fronted the post and put a body on him," Cheeks said. "Then Shawn (Kemp) did the same thing. We got better ball pressure and he missed some shots in the second half he made in the first."

The teams traded the lead 14 times before the Spurs opened a 52-45 lead just under two minutes into the third quarter on a layup by Bruce Bowen.

Portland answered with an 18-10 run over the next 7:52 to take a 63-62 lead on a jumper by Wells. But the Spurs closed the period strongly and held a 74-72 lead after three quarters.

The Blazers had to play the second half without Rasheed Wallace, who was suffering from back spasm. He scored just two points in 11 minutes before leaving.

"When somebody goes down, somebody else has to step up," Patterson said. "That's what (we) did tonight. It was just a total team effort tonight."

San Antonio led 83-78 with 7:41 remaining but Portland used a 12-3 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Wells with just under four minutes left.

"I'm a big-shot shooter," Wells joked. "I was just lucky today. I was hitting my shots (and) my teammates found me. It just worked out for us."

"I made some key turnovers down the stretch," Duncan said. "But we still had a chance going down the end there. (There were) just too many mistakes down the stretch."

Ducan made two free throws and Wells hit a jumper with 1:12 left to play making it 92-89, but the Spurs missed their next two shots and Duncan missed two free throws as the Blazers scored six of the final 10 points.

"I thought Portland played good 'D' everywhere on the court," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "They did a good job inside in the second half and we were just too sloppy to win the game tonight."
