Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Point guard Sam Cassell always has had a little shooting guard in him.

Splitting time at both backcourt spots, Cassell scored 29 points to lift the shorthanded Milwaukee Bucks to a 95-88 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

The Bucks already were without All-Star shooting guard Ray Allen, who missed his second straight game with a sore knee.

Earlier Thursday, they placed reserve shooting guard Michael Redd on the injured list with a sprained MCL suffered Tuesday.

Swingman Tim Thomas started at shooting guard, but Cassell also spent time there when Greg Anthony came on to run the point.

Never one to shy away from a shot, Cassell made a handful of big baskets down the stretch to turn away the Nuggets.

"I'm going to have to do that until someone gets back," said Cassell, who made 9-of-19 shots and 10-of-10 free throws. "You will be seeing me score points until Ray or Redd get back." Cassell played despite a sprained big toe that forced him to sit out Tuesday.

"It's tough out there," he said. "My toe gets stiff and it's hard to get loose.

Once I sit on the bench, it stiffens up and I lose my rhythm."

"The most important thing for this team right now is to get some guys healthy and back on the floor," Thomas said.

Glenn Robinson had 19 points and a season-high 15 rebounds for the Bucks (38-32), who had lost five of their previous six games.

Milwaukee also got a big lift from reserve forwards Darvin Ham and Mark Pope. With Thomas spending time in the backcourt, Ham had 11 points and six rebounds and Pope added eight and four.

"Pope and myself were able to do a lot of things out on the floor to help this team get a win," Ham said. "When the time comes for your opportunity, you have to step up."

"Mark Pope and Darvin Ham were solid factor tonight," Bucks coach George Karl said. "It was a workmanlike win for us."

It also was Milwaukee's 1,500th victory. The Bucks are 1,500-1,244 since entering the NBA in 1968.

Voshon Lenard scored 25 points for the Nuggets, who shot just 36 percent (33-of-92) and have lost nine of their last 11 games.

"We had a chance but shot 35 percent," Nuggets coach Mike Evans said. "We did some helter-skelter things down the stretch, but we had our chances."

With their injuries, the Bucks could not shake the Nuggets. A follow shot by Donnell Harvey made it 72-71 with 8:40 to go before Cassell hit a jumper to spark a 6-0 run.

Two free throws by Lenard cut the deficit to 80-78 with 4:12 remaining before Cassell hit another jumper. Lenard drilled a 3-pointer, but Cassell's jumper from the left wing gave Milwaukee an 84-81 lead with 3:31 left.

Anthony Mason and George McCloud traded a pair of free throws before Cassell hit a 3-pointer to seal it at 89-83 with 1:09 to go.

Mason scored 10 points for the Bucks, who shot 40 percent (31-of-77) and made 30-of-35 free throws. The Nuggets were 18-of-20 from the line.

Calbert Cheaney scored 15 points, McCloud added 11 and Juwan Howard 10 and 13 rebounds for Denver, which has lost five of its last six visits to the Bradley Center.

Lenard singlehandedly kept the Nuggets in it in the first half, scoring 17 straight points for Denver during one stretch. However, Milwaukee held a 53-44 halftime lead.
