Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Minus leading scorer and rebounder Jermaine O'Neal, the Indiana Pacers were unable to conjure up a sufficient comeback against the Orlando Magic.

Tracy McGrady had 29 points and Monty Williams added 19 and 10 rebounds as the Magic avoided a season sweep at the hands of the Pacers with a 114-106 victory.

O'Neal, who averaged 18.3 points and 10. 7 rebounds in the Pacers' three wins this season over the Magic, served the first of a two-game suspension for his role in an altercation with Detroit's Corliss Williamson on Tuesday.

"Jermaine is definitely a key for our team, especially getting everybody good looks," said guard Kevin Ollie, who had 16 points off the bench. "When he gets the ball down low, he creates double teams and free shots for our two-guards and point guards."

Orlando moved into fourth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race, one-half game ahead of Milwaukee. Meanwhile, the Pacers continued to cling to the final postseason spot despite losing for the fourth time in five games.

The Magic owned a 91-69 advantage to start the fourth quarter. But the Pacers scored the opening 14 points of the period to slice their deficit to eight.

"When teams are down, you've got to keep them down," said Magic point guard Darrell Armstrong, who scored 15 points. "We let Indiana back up and we almost paid for it. Lots of times, the team behind becomes the aggressive team, and that's what happened tonight."

Mike Miller contributed 15 points in 29 minutes off the bench in his return from an ankle injury as Orlando posted its 11th home win in the last 12 games.

"My energy level was good," Miller said. "When you miss nine games, your energy level is going to be good. The big thing is to sustain it and get into better shape. The bottom line is to push through it."

Orlando's Troy Hudson scored 14 points. The reserve guard made a jumper with two seconds left in the third to give the Magic their largest lead, 91-67.

But Ollie hit a baseline jumper as the quarter expired to inspire the Pacers.

"We just tried to push the ball up, penetrate and get easy baskets," said Ollie, who scored 13 points in the final period.

"We should have had that energy the whole game. It shouldn't take a 20-point deficit for us to start attacking back and getting into our transition game."

Ollie opened the fourth with a free throw and a driving layup to make it 91-71.

After Hudson missed a fadeaway, Jamaal Tinsley hit a jumper as Indiana continued to chip away at Orlando's lead.

"There were stretches where I thought we played great, great basketball, and then there were stretches where I thought we got a little lax," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "For them to make that run really hurt, but for the most part I thought we did a great job."

Reggie Miller and Ollie made layups, and Croshere followed with a turnaround jumper as Indiana pulled within 91-81.

Ron Mercer helped reduce the deficit against his former team, sinking a jumper with just under nine minutes left to make it 91-83.

"I thought the guys really fought hard," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "If we take better care of the basketball, we have a better chance to win this game. We turned the ball over too much, 21 times for 27 points."

Hudson finally stopped the run, nailing a jumper to restore the Magic's 10-point lead.

After the Pacers agained reduced the deficit to six, 110-104, in the final minute, Armstrong and Hudson sealed it with a pair of free throws apiece.
