Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Juwan Howard and the Denver Nuggets pushed the Chicago Bulls closer to a dubious achievement.

Howard scored 23 points to lead five players in double figures, leading the Nuggets to a 100-84 triumph over the Bulls and college teammate Jalen Rose.

The Bulls (17-56) have lost six in a row and 16 of 18 since a three-game winning streak that followed the acquisition of Rose from Indiana. They are trying to avoid becoming the second team since the NBA expanded to an 82-game schedule in the 1967-68 season to win fewer than 20 games in three consecutive seasons.

Chicago needs three wins in its final nine games to avoid joining the Memphis Grizzlies. The Bulls have five road games left and play eight teams that are jockeying for playoff position.

Over the last three seasons, Chicago has traded Elton Brand and Ron Artest, adding free agents Brad Miller and Ron Mercer, who were traded for Rose and Eddie Robinson.

Reserve guard Fred Hoiberg is the only player still on the Bulls from the 1999-2000 season and points to the development of teenage rookies Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler as being vital to the team's improvement.

"Those guys need to go out and work hard this summer," Hoiberg said. "They need to go on a mission and win some games and get in the weight room, which will make them better. Those guys are only 19 years old and they have a lot of learning to do."

Chicago coach Bill Cartwright said a failure to do the little things has kept down his team.

"There always comes a point in time with teams when they get tired of losing," Cartwright said. "It's the little things that get you beat. We didn't execute very well against that zone and stayed on the perimeter. Ultimately, it's just the little things that hurt you."

Howard had an easy time against Chicago's defense, scoring 13 points to help the Nuggets to a 52-42 halftime lead.

He had plenty of help, especially from Denver's inside game, which has been lacking this season. Center Zendon Hamilton added a career-high 20 points, reserve Voshon Lenard had 17 and Calbert Cheaney and rookie Kenny Satterfield chipped in 16 and 12, respectively.

One of the NBA's worst shooting teams, the Nuggets clicked at 53 percent (41-of-78) and improved to 5-2 when topping 50 percent.

"That was a big win for us," Denver coach Mike Evans said. "Satterfield played terrific tonight. We need him to step up. This is good for our confidence going into tomorrow night's game (against Detroit). I could not be more proud of the effort by the young guys."

Like Rose, Howard was acquired at midseason, going from a playoff contender to one of the worst teams in the league.

"We can't feel sorry for ourselves," Howard said. "We are professionals. We have to keep a level head and make the best of a bad situation."

Rose, another member of Michigan's famed "Fab Five" from 1991-94, finished with just 14 points, including two in the first half.

The Bulls hung around for the first eight minutes of the third quarter, trailing 66-60 with 4:03 left after a jumper by rookie Trenton Hassell. Rose had six points during that span.

But the Nuggets closed the period with a 13-5 run. They scored eight consecutive points on layups by Howard and Cheaney and jumpers by Satterfield and Howard.

Denver led 79-64 heading into the fourth quarter and pushed the lead to 85-64 on Lenard's jumper with 10:24 remaining.

"Hopefully, losing the way we are will create some kind of spark that makes you want to work and get better and also humbles you," Rose said. "We have a long way to go for that process to happen. A lot of time, losing can be devastating to your character.

"This was a real disappointing evening and it's hard to draw positives from a game of this magnitude. It's always disappointing when you lose. But sometimes it's how you lose that creates the disappointment."
