Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Steve Nash found a way to upstage Michael Jordan.

Nash scored 10 of his 22 points in the last 2:15 to outduel Jordan in the final quarter as the Dallas Mavericks posted a 110-103 victory over the Washington Wizards.

"You can't really give Mike a chance to win the game," Nash said. "We really knew we couldn't get down one or keep it even, we had to try to get a gap there because we had little from error."

Jordan was brutal in the first three quarters, missing all seven of his shots while making just a pair of free throws.

But showing he can still produce in the clutch, Jordan scored eight points in the fourth, including a reverse layup that tied the game, 96-96, with 2:26 to play.

"I got off to a rough start," Jordan said. "I didn't have any rhythm. We had a shot down the stretch, and in the fourth quarter, I started to find a rhythm and got to the basket. That team is so potent and we weren't able to pull it through."

Nash, however, answered 11 seconds later with a 3-pointer to give the Mavericks the lead for good.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 23 points to lead Dallas, which completed a 3-1 road trip.

"It wasn't an easy game for us to win, and we could have very easily lost it," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "Both teams executed really well down the stretch and made big shots, but we were able to make a couple more than they did.

"We played really well on this road trip, even in the loss in Minnesota."

Courtney Alexander, who scored 18 points, made a tough turnaround jumper with 1:52 to play, bringing the Wizards within one, but Nash answered 13 seconds later with a 16-footer.

Nowitzki converted a layup with 1:14 left and, after Jordan missed a jumper, Nash provided tha dagger with a three-point play with 44 seconds left.

Nash finished 7-of-15 from the field, with 19 of his points coming in the second half.

"It was just time to hit big shots and win the game," Nash said. "The open looks were there and I was able to capitalize down the stretch."

"He's a great player, and I've watched him for a very long time," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. "Steve will take the big shots; he loves to take them and will make them. He hit two big shots in this game and he is just a terrific player."

In the fourth quarter, Dallas sank all 13 of its foul shots as it improved to 43-1 when leading entering the final period.

Despite having Jordan, who normally receives a friendly whistle, the Wizards did not get to the line in the final period.

Jordan, who underwent knee surgery earlier this season, once again came off the bench. He looked every bit his age (39) for much of the game, before making a jumper with 8:03 left in the contest for his first basket.

"Michael is not going to be back to full strength this year because he's out there playing on one leg," Collins said. "But Michael wants to be out there and Michael wants to win and Michael's going to play to the finish."

Richard Hamilton scored 23 points to pace six players in double figures for the Wizards, who fell 2 1/2 games behind Indiana for the East's final playoff spot.

Hamilton scored 13 points in the opening half for the Wizards, who trailed by just two against the NBA's top offensive team. Nowitzki had 13 points in the half for Dallas.

Nash, who struggled in the first half, came alive in the third quarter, when he scored 10 points to help the Mavs to a 79-74 advantage entering the final period.
