Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- In their first game since it was announced Michael Jordan's season was over, the Washington Wizards looked like they had given up on theirs.

Glenn Robinson matched a season high with 38 points and Sam Cassell added 19 and 12 assists as the Milwaukee Bucks rolled to a 105-90 victory over the Wizards, whose playoff hopes are nearly extinct.

Just one day after Jordan scored a career-low two points in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Washington announced that the 39-year-old superstar would miss the remainder of the season due to the knee injury that has plagued him most of the second half.

The Wizards did not respond well to the bad news and barely put up a fight against the struggling Bucks, who took control with 20 consecutive points in the first quarter.

Cassell scored nine points and Robinson added five during the burst, which gave Milwaukee a 31-16 cushion. The Wizards never got closer than nine points thereafter and the Bucks snapped a three-game losing streak.

"We got off to a good start and that (run) just really rocked us back," Washington coach Doug Collins said. "I told our guys if we want to win any more games, we need to play defense."

Robinson made 13-of-24 shots, including all three of his 3-pointers, and 9-of-11 free throws as Milwaukee shot 51 percent (41-of-80) from the floor.

"We needed Glenn and Sam to take a lot of those shots," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "Tonight (Robinson) took 24 shots, but I don't think they were tough or forced. He had a great game."

"I know I'm going to get shots," Robinson said. "I just need to be sure they are quality shots. I am trying to concentrate on doing the extra things that help you get wins."

Greg Anthony scored 16 points and Anthony Mason added 15 on 6-of-9 shooting for the Bucks (39-35), who remained tied with Philadelphia and Charlotte for fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

"I'm taking my optimism pills right now," Karl said. "I'm planning and getting ready for the playoffs. I think we're capable of making a run. Gaining confidence in the playoffs has happened before and we hope it happens again."

The Bucks played without All-Star guard Ray Allen, who missed his sixth straight game with a knee injury. Tim Thomas was limited to 19 minutes off the bench and Michael Redd remains on the injured list with a sprained knee.

"Right now I don't think is a time to scrutinize," Karl said. "Right now is a time for us to get healthy and hopefully continue to win some games." "This game was important, we need to win as many games as possible and get our nucleus back together," Cassell said. "We have nine games left and I'd like to go 8-1 in that stretch. That's my goal."

Courtney Alexander scored 22 points and Richard Hamilton had 20 for Washington (34-41), which has lost three straight and is three games behind Indiana for the final playoff position in the East.

Tyronn Lue added 12 points and rookie Kwame Brown added 11 for the Wizards, who shot 48 percent (35-of-73) but committed 20 turnovers, leading to 24 points for the Bucks.

"We need to fight until the end," Lue said. "We aren't giving up, there is still a chance for us. We can't give up on the season."
