Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons clinched their first Central Division title in 12 years with a 105-99 victory over the Atlanta Hawks as rookie Zeljko Rebraca set season highs with 18 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks.

With Ben Wallace sidelined with a right ankle sprain, Rebraca made just his second start and shot 7-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line for the Pistons, who had not won the division since 1990, when they captured their second of back-to-back NBA championships.

"Tonight was a great opportunity to play good," Rebraca said. "I tried to play my best game, this is my best game this year. I told Ben before the game that I had to do his job, and I did his job. Now we're the Central Division champions. That's great."

"Obviously, Ben Wallace is a terrific player, yet you know the guy that steps in for him sees it as an opportunity and you always expect him to play well," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said.

Chucky Atkins scored 20 points, Clifford Robinson added 19 and Jerry Stackhouse had 18 and 12 assists for Detroit (47-30), which moved 5 1/2 games in front of second-place Charlotte (41-35) and owns the tiebreaker after taking three of four meetings from the Hornets.

"It's an unbelievable feeling," Stackhouse said. "Atlanta came here just to be the spoiler and we wouldn't let them do it. `Z' was the one who came out and set the tone. That was great to see. I think we learned a lesson tonight. We need to get `Z' some easy touches early in the game. We did that tonight and once his offense got going, his defense really picked up."\x0D\x0A After Stackhouse made a layup to give Detroit a 99-89 lead with 91 seconds left, the Hawks stormed back and got within 101-99 on a dunk by Jason Terry with 13 seconds to go.

But Jon Barry sank two free throws with 11 seconds remaining and Stackhouse closed the scoring with two from the line with three seconds to play.

"It seems like to do something pertinent or important, it's never easy," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "We struggled there a little at the end, but I give our players great credit for the year that they've had. To be the first team in the league to clinch a division title is significant and it just points to how hard these guys have played and how much they've committed to each other. And right now, we just need to keep working on getting better."

Terry had 24 points and 12 assists, Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 23 points and Nazr Mohammed chipped in 17 and 12 rebounds for the Hawks, who shot 43 percent (39-of-91) while allowing the Pistons to connect at 52 percent (41-of-79).

"We had plenty of opportunities to take the ballgame," Terry said. "I thought we just gave it to them. Against a team like this, the best team in the East, you have to take advantage of them without Ben Wallace in the game. I thought we did that for three, four quarters, and you get down to the last two minutes and you don't finish plays, it's going to be tough on you."

Atlanta jumped out to a 16-7 advantage after Terry made a layup with 5:44 left in the first quarter, then took a 29-25 edge into the second period.

Detroit surged in front, 54-50, at halftime and took the lead for good at 72-70 on a jumper by Stackhouse with 3:20 left in the third quarter.

"For me to come to a team that hadn't made the playoffs and only won 32 games, and for us to turn it around the following year and to win our division says a lot for our team," said Robinson, who was acquired from Phoenix last July. "I don't think we exceeded our expectations because from the start we thought we could win. It was just a matter of going out there and playing consistently and trying to leave it out there on the floor."

The victory was the Pistons' seventh in a row over the Hawks at The Palace at Auburn Hills and 12th in the last 14 meetings overall.

"The Pistons are good," Kruger said. "They do things well and they're having an outstanding year. We needed to fight them off a little bit longer than we did, but they made a run, which you expect them to do. And we didn't fight them off long enough."

Detroit improved to a league-best 21-0 when scoring at least 100 points and moved within two games of New Jersey for home-court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs.

"We've done it and we'll celebrate tonight, but now we try to catch New Jersey," said Stackhouse, whose team faces the Nets on April 16 at Continental Airlines Arena. "It would be great to have a chance to go in there and take it away from them."
