Game StorySALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Michael Finley had a different partner in crime in the fourth quarter in Nick Van Exel.
Finley and Van Exel combined for 22 points in the final period as the Dallas Mavericks prevented the Utah Jazz from clinching a playoff berth with a 105-96 victory.
With All-Star Dirk Nowitzki sidelined in the second half with a strained left ankle, Dallas needed another player to step up down the stretch. Van Exel complied, banking in a 3-pointer with 5:35 remaining to put the Mavericks ahead for good at 91-88. Finley followed with a basket for a five-point edge.
Utah pulled within 99-96 on Karl Malone's bucket with two minutes left, but Greg Buckner scored off a feed from Steve Nash to restore Dallas' five-point lead.
Malone scored 22 points to lead the Jazz after missing Friday's loss to Sacramento with a swollen right knee, just the fifth game he has sat out in 17 seasons. Utah still can clinch a playoff spot if the Los Angeles Clippers lose at Seattle.
