Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Once again, the Chicago Bulls handed the Philadelphia 76ers a damaging loss in their home finale.

Jalen Rose made two free throws with two seconds left as the Bulls rallied to post a 98-96 victory over the 76ers, who could have clinched at least the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The game was tied at 96-96 after Eric Snow made 2-of-3 free throws with 14 seconds left. Chicago isolated Rose, who blew past Derrick McKey and was fouled. Rose, who finished with 32 points, calmly drained his free throws.

"Really, the final play was simple," Rose said. "They wanted to give it to me and I was going to try to make a play. I wanted to get the last shot. Fortunately, that is what happened. Derrick McKey is a very good defender."

The Sixers had one last chance but Snow missed a long jumper as time expired.

Philadelphia, which led by 11 points at halftime, fell one-half game behind Orlando in the race for the fourth spot, which carries homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

"It came down to the end of the game," Snow said. "They came out defensively, they had a more aggressive nature in the second half and they made it tough for us. We didn't get any easy baskets and second chance baskets. We gave it a good shot, unfortunately, we were unable to pull it out." \x0D\x0A Last season, Philadelphia used its reserves liberally in its season finale and lost here to Chicago. The loss ended up costing the Sixers homecourt advantage in the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.

While the defeat was damaging, it certainly was predictable for Philadelphia given the number of players that were missing. Derrick Coleman was placed on the injured list earlier in the day and joined Allen Iverson, Aaron McKie and Dikembe Mutombo on the sidelines. Mutombo missed his first game of the season with tendinitis in his left knee.

"I'm not going to make a player play when he is hurt," 76ers coach Larry Brown said. "Derrick wanted to play. I watched him play, I watched him limp in. Then he gets on a plane to Indiana and he's going to have a swollen knee, so that's not even an issue. With Dikembe, he said his wrist was bothering him, his knee was bothering him, he had four things that were bothering him, so this is what we did." \x0D\x0A Rose made 12-of-19 shots and 8-of-10 at the line as he was clearly the best player on the court. It came against Brown, who clashed with Rose when he coached him in Indiana.

"I don't relish it any more because its Coach Brown," Rose said. "We've had a hundred more battles since he left Indiana both in the playoffs and regular season. Bottom line is that I wanted to come out and play my game."

Jamal Crawford scored 14 points and rookie Eddy Curry added 12 for the Bulls, winners of four of their last five games. Chicago moved one-half game ahead of Golden State in the race to avoid the worst record in the NBA.

Snow scored 21 points and handed out eight assists for Philadelphia, which shot 42 percent (35-of-83). Jabari Smith, who was activated Monday when Coleman was placed on the injured list, added a career-high 14 points off the bench as the Sixers racked up a season-high 42 points from their reserves.

The Sixers' patchwork starting lineup included rookie Alvin Jones and Corie Blount. Jones scored a career-high eight points but Blount did not score and missed all seven shots.

Snow did not register an assist after halftime as Philadelphia was limited to 13 points in the fourth quarter.

"Eric had eight assists at halftime," Brown said. "I don't think he had an assist in the second half, I don't think Speedy (Claxton) did either. We had some open shots, we shot a couple of air balls, Corie Blount goes 0-for-7. You still have a chance to win."

The physical game featured 50 fouls and 67 free-throw attempts. Chicago made 30-of-38 while the Sixers were 25-of-29. There were seven lead changes and eight ties.

"I think in the second half we came out and played how we (normally) play," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "I was really proud of those guys."
