Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Shawn Marion scored five of his 21 points in the final two minutes to lead the Phoenix Suns to a 78-74 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in their home opener. With the Suns leading, 70-68, and 1:27 left, Stephon Marbury dribbled from the right side to the foul line, jumped and kicked a pass to the left wing to Marion, who sank the game's only 3-pointer. Marion hit a pair of free throws 22 seconds later to give Phoenix a seven-point cushion. "We were a little jinxed at first," Marion said of the Suns' 33-percent shooting. "But we weren't going to stop shooting or think about it. We'll shoot when it's open. We don't force them up there. A lot of teams we've been watching force them up there. They're just launching them. We're being conservative. We're shooting when we're open. It just wasn't going in. I hit the first one." Marion also grabbed 16 rebounds. Marbury posted five of his 10 assists in the fourth quarter and scored seven of his 15 points down the stretch. "In the fourth quarter, Marbury took it over," Cleveland coach John Lucas said. "(He) controlled the tempo of the game and made the big shots." The Cavaliers got within three points and had a chance to tie after Marbury missed two foul shots with 13 seconds left. But Darius Miles threw away a pass, and Suns rookie Amare Stoudemire sealed the game with a free throw. "When you shoot 33 percent from the field, 20 percent from the 3-point line and 74 percent from the foul line and win, you've got to feel pretty good about that," Suns coach Frank Johnson said. "And I do. I think the key is our defense gets us going. Our offense is not where it needs to be and we will get it there but it will take time." Miles, Tyrone Hill and Zydrunas Ilgauskas all posted double-doubles for Cleveland. Ilgauskas had 17 points and a career-high 22 rebounds but shot just 6-of-22 from the field and was held to one point and three boards in the final period. "We didn't make our shots down the stretch," Ilgauskas said. "I shot the worst, 6-for-22, and that's bad, that's bad for me. I missed the shots I usually make, and that hurt us. I couldn't stop shooting because we needed my scoring. I don't think the shots were that bad. I just missed. I couldn't hit rim." Several of Ilgauskas' shots came from well outside the paint, not the ideal area for the 7-3 Lithuanian. "I don't mind him taking 22 shots if they're the right 22 shots," Lucas said. "Today his shots weren't the right shots." Scott Williams had four points and a steal in the first two minutes as Phoenix used a 12-3 run to take a 64-62 lead, its first since a 6-5 advantage in the early going. Ricky Davis scored 21 points for Cleveland, which led by as many as 12 points. The Cavaliers went 4-for-18 from the floor in the fourth quarter. Cleveland wore down in the fourth quarter thanks in part to a bench that was missing forward Chris Mihm, who sat out with a strained hamstring. Jumaine Jones scored the only six bench points for the Cavs before fouling out. Cleveland only got 48 minutes out of its bench, while three starters played over 40 minutes. The Suns have never lost in 44 games in which they have held their opponents to under 80 points, including four under Johnson.
