Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz got some help from their bench to break into the win column. Matt Harpring had 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead a strong effort off the bench as the Jazz continued their home dominance of the Golden State Warriors with a 101-92 victory. Trying to avoid their first 0-3 start in 23 years, the Jazz nearly squandered a 15-point fourth-quarter lead before holding on for their 16th straight home win over the Warriors. Despite making just 5-of-15 shots, Harpring also contributed on the boards and handed out five assists. He was one of three Utah reserves in double figures as Scott Padgett scored 11 points and Calbert Cheaney 10. The Jazz's bench outscored the Warriors' reserves, 43-22. "We can't win without our bench playing well," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They finally seemed to know where to go to get open shots." Playing what could be their final home opener, Karl Malone and John Stockton were their normal selves for Utah. Malone made 11-of-26 shots for 26 points and Stockton had 15 points and seven assists. Antawn Jamison scored 23 points, Gilbert Arenas 19 and Oscar Torres 16 for the Warriors, who have not won at the Delta Center since November 11, 1994. After playing poorly in losses to New Orleans and Atlanta, the Jazz led virtually the entire way in this one. Utah took an eight-point lead into the final period and used a 15-8 run to make it 92-77 with 5:32 remaining on a mid-range jumper by Harpring, who had four points in the surge. But playing for the second straight night, Golden State showed some fight. Jamison had six points in a 15-3 spurt that he capped with two foul shots, helping the Warriors close to 95-92 with 77 seconds to play. But they did not score again. "It's hard to play from behind against a veteran team like that and to come back, but we did," said Jamison, who committed seven turnovers. "We're proved we didn't quit, but it still boils down to wins and losses," said Warriors coach Eric Musselman, who at 38 is younger than Stockton and Malone. Padgett made a twisting shot in the lane 17 seconds later, the Warriors committed a turnover on their ensuing possession and Malone sealed it with a layup with 32 seconds remaining. Golden State was careless with the ball all night, committing 18 turnovers while shooting just 37.5 percent (27-of-72) from the field. The Warriors got an encouraging performance from oft-injured center Erick Dampier, who had 12 points and 15 rebounds in 36 minutes. Andrei Kirilenko added 10 points for the Jazz, who shot 43 percent (41-of-95) and held a 48-43 rebounding advantage.
