Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets made a more civil statement this time around. Jason Kidd just missed a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists as the Nets won their first road game, 87-79 over the Washington Wizards. New Jersey posted a 102-91 victory over Indiana on Friday in a contest that featured 59 personal fouls, nine individual technicals, four flagrant fouls and three ejections. It also resulted in Kidd being tossed for the first time in his career, a move that resulted in a $5,000 fine before this one. "The league fined me for the shoving match," Kidd said. "Well-deserved. Me included, we all learned from that game last night." The physical play continued at the MCI Center, but the extracurricular activity came to a halt as New Jersey faced another team considered an Eastern Conference contender. Kenyon Martin's jumper capped an 8-0 run to open the second half that put the Nets ahead for good at 43-36 with just under nine minutes left in the third quarter. Washington pulled within 62-61 in the fourth quarter on a basket by Jerry Stackhouse before New Jersey used a 10-2 run to gain some breathing room. Five different Nets scored, including Aaron Williams, who made a follow shot for a 72-63 lead with just under five minutes to play. "Especially in the third quarter, our pressure was fantastic," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "We really got into them and I think that helped us offensively. It really got us going, and that's what's going to win games for us." The Nets are 3-0 for the first time since opening the 1997-98 with four wins. Last season, New Jersey had games in which it had advantages in fast-break points of 31-0 and 27-0 against the Wizards. They settled for a 20-11 advantage in this one. "When you play this team, you can't give them any energy to get themselves in an up-tempo game," Washington guard Michael Jordan said. "We want to control the tempo at all times. I think in the second half we lost control of that." New Jersey placed five players in double figures as Kerry Kittles scored 15 points, Richard Jefferson had 13 and Martin 12. The Nets outrebounded their third straight opponent with a 48-39 edge as Martin grabbed eight. "Yeah, we knew that defense was the key," Nets center Dikembe Mutombo said. "They had the great game against Boston, offensively and defensively as well, so we just came out and played together to take them away from their game." Washington was led by Stackhouse's 23 points but turned in its second abysmal offensive performance in three games. The Wizards shot below 30 percent in a season-opening loss at Toronto and clicked at just 37 percent (31-of-83) against New Jersey. "Jason Kidd showed tonight why he is talked about as being the MVP of this league," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. "He came in and had a stretch of about three minutes where he just changed the game." The Wizards committed 25 fouls, which led to plenty of free throws for the Nets. New Jersey converted 27-of-30 attempts as Kidd drained all eight. "The way I attack and the way I got bumped going to the basket, I should've gotten to the free-throw line, and that makes a much closer game than it is," Stackhouse said. "That's a tough one for me to sit here and swallow because that's something I can't control right now. That's the dynamics of who we are and who we're trying to be, and who they are and what they've earned." Jordan scored 14 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter as he furiously tried to rally Washington. The starting forward tandem of Bryon Russell and Kwame Brown combined to make just 6-of-21 shots for 12 points. Brown grabbed 14 rebounds, including six on the offensive end. The Nets started the game on a 12-4 run, capped by a dunk by Kittles, but turned in a sloppy effort the rest of the first half. New Jersey had 10 turnovers that led to 14 points for Washington, which took a 36-35 halftime edge. New Jersey won its fourth straight game against Washington since Jordan poured in 45 points on New Year's Eve in a 98-76 rout.
