Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Michael Olowokandi scored 19 points and grabbed a career high-tying 20 rebounds as the Los Angeles Clippers rallied for their first victory of the season, a 74-72 triumph over the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons wasted a 14-point second-half lead, did not score for the final 3 1/2 minutes and fell from the ranks of the unbeaten. Olowokandi was 6-of-11 from the field and 7-of-10 from the line. He blocked three shots and had two steals. "It feels good to be a part of this win more than anything," said the 7-footer, who also grabbed 20 rebounds on December 29, 2001 against Boston. "It's important to win the first game. But more than anything else, it's a future leap to win this first game. "I understand it's only the third game of the season but when you go 0-1, 0-2, 0-3, then I think the team confidence begins to get shaky. We sharpened that up tonight to get this victory. Hopefully, it's something we can build on." After Richard Hamilton's jumper gave Detroit a 52-38 lead with 5:41 left in the third quarter, Olowokandi scored eight points in a 20-3 run. Keyon Dooling had two 3-pointers in the spurt, the second of which gave Los Angeles a 58-55 lead with three seconds remaining in the period. Jon Barry quickly tied it with a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter. Corliss Williams gave the Pistons a 70-66 lead with 7:13 left, but Detroit managed just two points the rest of the way. "It's a game we should have won," Hamilton said. "It's a tough one to lose that way. We have to watch the tape and see what we can do better. We have to wash this one away. We knew it was going to be a game of runs and they made their run. We said in the fourth quarter after they made their run it was our turn to make our run, but we just couldn't get over the hump." Corey Maggette's driving layup gave Los Angeles the lead for good at 73-72 with 2:32 to go. Elton Brand added a free throw with 1:27 left. Andre Miller had a chance to increase the advantage but missed two free throws with 59 seconds remaining. Detroit had a chance to tie or win the game with three seconds left, but a wide-open Cliff Robinson back-rimmed a 3-pointer. "I think it was a good look but it shouldn't have come to that," said Robinson, who scored 13 points. "We let those guys get back when we had control of it. When you have a team down you have to keep them down, and we weren't able to do that tonight." Brand finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Clippers (1-2), who avoided their second 0-3 start in five seasons despite shooting just 32 percent (22-of-69) from the field. "It feels great," Brand said. "This is a Detroit team that came in tough and we fought it out. It was imperative we got a win before we hit the road (for a four-game trip). We need to protect our home court. We didn't want to come out 0-3 at home. We got this one against a good Detroit team. A team that was a team undefeated in pre-season and this season. That's a good team we beat." Wang Zhizhi, the 7-1 Chinese center, scored five points in 10 minutes of the second half in his first substantial playing time for Los Angeles. He played only one minute in Los Angeles' season opener and did not play in the second game. Clippers guard Quentin Richardson left late in the second quarter with a hyperextended right knee. He did not return. Hamilton scored 25 points, Ben Wallace pulled down 16 rebounds and Chauncey Billups grabbed 10 for the Pistons (2-1), who began a five-game road trip. They went 8-0 in the preseason. "You can't put much into preseason," Robinson said. "We had a good preseason. We were able to be consistent at what we wanted to get done as a team. But it's preseason, this is regular season. You need to carry it over. We're still pleased with our team. It's only one loss." Detroit, which owned a 40-32 lead at halftime, shot 32 percent (26-of-81), making just 5-of-23 3-pointers.
