Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The stars of the Utah Jazz may be too old for the demanding NBA schedule. Karl Malone was ill and held scoreless for the first time in his career and long-time teammate John Stockton was not a factor as the Jazz suffered a 91-77 loss to the Seattle SuperSonics. Utah was playing for the fourth time in five nights and was in its third different time zone this week. That grueling start to the season may have taken its toll on the 39-year-old Malone and the 40-year-old Stockton. "I suited up and I probably shouldn't have," said Malone. "Maybe I should be smarter about this kind of stuff. Hindsight is 20-20, but that shouldn't take anything away from (Seattle)." "I don't think we came with any life," Stockton said. "I think we came in feeling sorry for ourselves and that's what happens when you let it happen." Malone played only 15 minutes and was held scoreless on 0-of-7 shooting. Stockton was limited to 20 minutes and had eight points on 1-of-4 shooting and five assists. "I don't think I ever played a game where I didn't score," said Malone, who left with 8:32 left in the third quarter and did not return. "If you stay around long enough in this game you'll have a lot of firsts. Sometimes things just happen." "He got his shots," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "I don't think he was feeling very well, but he was out there." Gary Payton scored eight of his 18 points in the decisive first quarter for the SuperSonics, who rolled to their third straight win, improving to 3-0 for the second time in three years. Seattle closed the first quarter with a 12-2 run led by Payton and Desmond Mason, who scored four points apiece during the spurt. The Sonics had a 20-9 lead entering the second quarter and the Jazz never got closer than nine thereafter. "Even though (the Jazz) played four games in five nights, we were well aware of that and wanted to try to take advantage of that," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We did a good job of pushing the ball early and finding some ways to make some easy baskets." Seattle had a 45-29 halftime advantage and Utah never got closer than 13 points in the final 24 minutes. The Sonics had their largest lead at 79-53 on layup by Mason with 8:52 left. Mason scored 16 points and fellow reserve Vladimir Radmanovic added 15. Kenny Anderson, who did not play in the first two games, had 10 points in his season debut. Seattle shot 46 percent (40-of-88) from the floor, held Utah to 41 percent (29-of-70) and had a 48-36 rebounding edge. "We wanted to come out and play solid basketball on both ends of the floor," Mason said. "(McMillan) has done a good job of scouting teams and putting together and good plan. We just go out and execute." Andrei Kirilenko scored 17 points and Matt Harpring added 16 off the bench for Utah, which has lost three of its first four games.
