Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Toronto Raptors continue to find new ways to win without Vince Carter. Lindsay Hunter hit a 16-foot jumper with 1.6 seconds left in overtime to propel the Raptors to a 109-105 win over the Chicago Bulls. Hunter scored 23 points, Alvin Williams added 25 and Voshon Leonard chipped in 23. "Just getting the win is the most important thing," Hunter said. "We were so undermanned tonight." The Raptors were without Carter, their high-flying All-Star who suffered a strained quadriceps tendon above his left knee in Saturday's loss to Houston. Big man Antonio Davis was out after straining his left rib cage in the same game. Toronto has won 13 of its last 15 games without Carter in the lineup dating to last season and 15 in a row over Chicago. "That's what a team is all about," Williams said. "Everyone has to step up. We learned a lot last year to play as a team without our superstar." "It was a very stressful game, but what I liked is we played hard and played together," said Carter, who is expected to miss at least a week. "With two of our scorers out, we definitely needed a team effort and we got that." Toronto appeared to win at the end of regulation on a last-second tip by Mamadou N'diyae, but video review of the play found that time had expired before the ball left his hand. It was the first time the NBA's new replay rule, introduced in July, was used to decide the outcome of a game. The Raptors took an 18-point lead into the fourth quarter but watched it fade to nothing after being outscored, 32-14. "They did a good job of coming back in the fourth, but we weathered the storm so we deserve a lot of credit," Williams said. Chicago's Donyell Marshall overshadowed a stellar performance when he missed the first of two free throws with four-tenths of a second left in overtime. He could have tied the game at 107-107. Despite his miss, Marshall led the Bulls with 32 points in 37 minutes off the bench, shooting 14-of-22 from the field and pulling down 17 rebounds. "It was definitely a tough one," Marshall said. "We had a chance to send it into another overtime and I missed a free throw. It was just one of the bad breaks. I played so hard to help the team get back in the game and it all goes away." "We just didn't get it done early," Jalen Rose added. "But I have to point to myself first, especically without Antonio and Vince. I need to take the blame for this one." Rose struggled in the first half but finished with 24 points and sent the game to overtime on a driving layup with 8.4 seconds left. N'diaye finished with 12 points and eight blocks - both career highs - while Jerome Williams recoreded his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The Bulls have lost their last two after opening the season with two wins. "I was very disappointed for us, and the disappointing thing is that the fourth quarter is how we play," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "That is how we played the first two games. "I am happy with the way that we came back, happy with the way we competed, and at the end of the game we had an opportunity to win."
